Johnny Depp may have an unwelcome visit from the Secret Service in his future after the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales actor talked about killing the U.S. President at an event in Glastonbury, U.K..
Depp was introducing his 2004 film The Libertine at a drive-in event at Cineramageddon — a five day film festival within the Glastonbury Festival — when, after receiving questions from the excited audience, he answered: “I think [President Trump] needs help and there are a lot of wonderful dark, dark places he could go. It is just a question — I’m not insinuating anything. By the way, this is going to be in the press. It will be horrible. I like that you are all a part of it.”
The crowd cheered as he continued, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” He’s referring, of course, to the 1865 assassination of Abraham Lincoln by actor John Wilkes Booth. He went on, “I want to qualify, I am not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it has been a while and maybe it is time.”
Trump has been a sore spot for many in the entertainment industry who have often felt the wrath of the blustering President after voicing their criticisms. You might remember when Meryl Streep used her lifetime achievement award acceptance speech at the Golden Globes in January to criticize Trump, to which he responded on Twitter, calling her “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.”
The most recent, and probably most severe case, involves Kathy Griffin, who faced potentially career-ending backlash and an investigation by the Secret Service after posting a photo of herself holding the fake severed head of President Trump.
Suffice it to say, Depp may have to watch what happens next, because chances are, he’s got an angry President coming his way. ~Alexa Caruso
