Jordan Peele to produce HBO horror anthology Lovecraft Country

Jordan PeeleIt seems everyone wants a piece of the creative mind of Jordan Peele. The comedian-turned-movie director had a successful debut with his hit film Get Out, which pleased critics and audiences alike, and the entertainment world has taken notice.

HBO has ordered a horror anthology titled Lovecraft Country, which will be produced by Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions company, as well as J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot and Underground creator Misha Green. Green, known for her acclaimed series about the Underground Railroad, will be writing the pilot, while Peele and Abrams will serve as executive producers alongside Ben Stephenson of Bad Robot.

The series is based on a novel by Matt Ruff and is about Atticus Black, 25, and his two companions’ travels across Jim Crow-era America in the 1950s in the hopes of locating Atticus’s father, who disappeared.

While the series will focus on supernatural encounters (hence the reference to H.P. Lovecraft, the master terror storyteller), it will also depict the racially-charged horrors inherent to the time period — subject matter that both Peele and Green are skilled at portraying. It marks the latest attempt by the studio to return to a horror anthology since its hit 1980s series, Tales from the Crypt.

This news comes shortly after the announcement that Peele struck a deal with Universal Pictures to write, direct and produce a new social thriller. Peele was also offered the job of directing a live-action adaptation of the hit anime film Akira, but he turned it down citing the fact that he wants to generate his own original content and material. Seems the talented content creator is going to have his hands full for the next little while, and we can’t wait to see more of his work! ~Alexa Caruso
