Justin Bieber street sign stolen

Caroline Gonzales, 11, was made “mayor of the day” in her hometown of  Forney, Texas after winning a city Facebook contest that was meant to boost young people’s interest in municipal government. As her first executive decision in office, Caroline decided to temporarily rename Main Street “Justin Bieber Way.” When asked by E! Online why she renamed the street, she simply said, “Because I really like Justin Bieber. I like his music and I like him. And I thought, why not have a street in my home town named after my favorite singer?” Unfortunately, less than 48 hours later, the sign, which was supposed to stay up until the weekend, was stolen. Caroline’s father Tony said his daughter was quite upset when he gave her the news. “They’ve definitely stolen some joy from her. Her eyes got watery,” he told ABC News. The town’s real mayor, Darren Rozell, has promised to replace the sign, saying, “It may be someone’s idea of a joke. But we’re not going to leave this little girl’s summer on a sour note.” The sign, which has a value of $30.22, will be replaced at 4 p.m. this afternoon.

Good idea to get people interested in how municipal governance works. But why did they then “teach” her that a mayor can do anything she wants, just because she wants it, without any consultation with constituents. A small matter, but a huge, bad lesson.

Silver, she’s 11, it was a contest, she wasn’t supposed to past new laws.

But she was supposed to be learning about the workings of a governmental structure.

It was a nice gesture. Maybe the lesson was that a mayor CAN make a difference in town. whether it’s changing a name of a street to pushing for a new water pollution control plant or adding street lights in a trouble intersection. Of course some ideas might take town meetings and town council meetings and votes, but some decisions can be made with the swipe of a pen. It’s a street sign! It should not have been stolen and I’m glad the town will replace it for a few days, then hopefully take it down and give it to her.
Now for the week while the sign is up, is there a confused mail carrier out there with stacks of mail wondering where Main St. is?

Although Mayor for the Day, she has accomplished something. I am not a Justin Bieber fan, but I admire her moxie! I would vote for Caroline Gonzales!!

If I was Mayor for a day, I would have a “Dobby Avenue” or a “Hermione Boulevard” or something Harry Potter-ish. Maybe even something Lord of the Rings, like “Smeagol Drive” or something Dark Knight-ish, like “Alfred Street”

Most 11 year old children cannot comprehend political structure and reasoning anyway. It was more for fun and to get her aware of the municipal government. Polictics are boring lets face it, so this is a good way to ignite interest in youths.
