Katie Holmes apology in drug scandal

The front cover of a January 2011 issue of Star magazine reported that actress Katie Holmes was a drug addict, with the headline reading “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE! Katie DRUG SHOCKER!” Last month The Kennedys star filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against the magazine for their “untrue, unethical and unlawful” assumption. It was falsely reported that Holmes was hooked on a Scientology treatment that causes an effect “similar to heroine.” The lawsuit, Holmes’ rep told TMZ, has been settled. Star’s publisher American Media not only made a “substantial” donation to Katie’s charity but was forced to issue an apology, which can be seen in the current issue of Star. The apology reads, “Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction. Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes’ behalf for any harm that we may have caused.” Katie released her own statement saying, “I’m pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably and accept American Media’s apology.” ~Natasha Tsakiris
