Ke$ha: Canada’s club scene sucks

By Alexandra Heilbron on April 15, 2011 | 24 Comments

Ke$ha has posed for poster with a photo of baby seal and a caption that reads “Canada’s Club Scene Sucks” in order to spread the message about Canada’s annual seal hunt. She told animal protection society Peta, “I was lucky enough to get to watch a bunch of wild seals recently and truly fell in love with these amazing creature. Canada gets to be host to harp seals each year during their migration to the ice to give birth which is beautiful and peaceful. But because the babies’ fur is so soft, there are people who club and brutally kill these young animals. The Canadian seal slaughter is barbaric and archaic.” Iggy Pop also posed for a poster and says in a video (below), “This shouldn’t be happening. Clubbing baby seals is sick and gives Canada a black eye. Don’t let the greed of a few tarnish the image of the whole country.” The new posters will be displayed at music festivals and at Ke$ha and Iggy concerts throughout the summer. They are also asking fans to write letters of protest against the seal massacres to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “I know they’ll help me and PETA ban the Canadian seal slaughter so the only place you see baby seal fur is in a museum,” Ke$ha said of her fans. Although I understand that visually for the world the seal hunt is an issue. My question is will Ke$ha decide to subsidize those who depend on the seal hunt for their annual income? Financials aside what about the fish populations which benefit from this hunt. With the over fishing in many areas seals often decimate fish populations in targeted areas. The seal hunt in many ways assists in controlling this from happening. Finally last but not least if I were to start blabbering on and on about how much I love cows…would the world all get behind me and protest the consumption and killing of cows? (Heck no!) The only reason why this is even gaining any form of traction is that traditionally seals and seal meat is not a socially acceptable Caucasian North American meat to consume.

Chinchila’s are cute too but it doesn’t stop the rich bitches from wearing their fur.

  3. john • April 15, 2011 @ 2:09 PM

man i get hunting thats not hunting and people who bash a animals brains in and let them suffer and die deserve the same bunch oh sick freaks

  4. Red • April 15, 2011 @ 2:26 PM

I disagree Lifeless. I think the issue is mainly HOW the seals are killed, so I will agree with john (plus better grammar) on this one.

  5. Germain • April 15, 2011 @ 3:19 PM

Kill them seals, KILL’ EM ALL!!!

  6. Linda • April 15, 2011 @ 4:40 PM

I believe these celebrities should stick to what they are good at, become better informed and mind their own business….

  7. kenian • April 15, 2011 @ 9:57 PM

It’s horrifying. I couldn’t watch so I closed my eyes but hearing their screams made me cry. I can’t believe we allow this to happen in Canada. Thank you Tribute for bringing this to people’s attentions. And to say that anyone should make a living doing this is wrong. People who brutally bludgeon babies as they are screaming in terror should not be able to sleep at night, let alone make money from it.

  8. hmmm • April 15, 2011 @ 10:29 PM

I agree with a lot of L1feless’ points. However, I definitely do not agree with how these animals are being killed, bludgeoned to death(half).

As to whether or not this video shows the normal practice of how these seals are hunted, or if it’s just a one off case from a specific hunting party IDK. But what’s shown in the video IMHO is very wrong. The sad thing is, these people are probably just trying to increase their profits by not having to use ammo.

Or maybe this really is the most humane and cost efficient way to kill them, blunt force trauma to the brain…

If she is fighting for seals why the he*l does she cover this whole front cover and a little tiny photoshop picture of a seal hides in the corner. What..is she protecting the little seal…give me a break she was probably told to do this by her PR agent.
She probably didnt even know what a seal was before this! She should just go back to getting DRUNK DRUNK or CRUNK or sniffing coke or whatever it is she does that makes her look like a man. How can anyone take a Kesha with more then a grain of salt in regarsd to a serious issue of animal rights when the best she can sing about getting drunk in almost every song she S**TS out. Not much of a role model for youths is it…? Kesha should be on the cover of a Captain Morgan ad or Jack Daniels since thats more her marketing approach as respresented in her songs. She brushes her teeth with liquor remember.
PETA is the biggest joke. Instead of bringing the general animal rights issue to the fore front they degrade women to gain peoples attention.
    F this noise im out.

  10. Thibz • April 16, 2011 @ 6:31 AM

And one more note if “Canadas club scene sucks” then what does that say for other places that club seal…is thier club scene better…..horrible ad

  11. justin • April 16, 2011 @ 2:28 PM

phew!! for a second there, i thought she meant something serious like Canada’s nightclub scene

  12. what_do_I_know • April 16, 2011 @ 3:54 PM

    1. it is a way of living that has been going on for hundreds of years.
    2. Peta are hypocrites, especially when it comes to their rate of success for adoption.
    3. Most of these “celebrities” do not do their research. Remember how Paul McCartney thought he was in Nfld to see the hunt.
    4. You do not shut it down because a few bad apples. If that was true there would be NO pet stores anywhere. Yes there are some cruel and sick people other there but most are not.
    5. If you looked into how our live stock is handle and treated you would be even more discussed. Chickens are chain line manufactured products.
    ……….but what do I know

  13. Nancy • April 16, 2011 @ 6:15 PM

I address this to hmmm…the reason why they club the seal instead of just shooting them is cuz they need the fur. It is of no use to them if it’s riddled with bullet holes or stained with blood!!

My opinion..I don’t agree with it no but, we all have to make a living somehow. I mean, people do nothing but complain in this damn world and one big complaint with many is all those on welfare who don’t work and how working people have to pay for them. Another is homelessness and poverty. Well, stop trying to put people out of work with your damn complaining! Besides, as L1feless pointed out, these seals lives are no more important that any other animal. It’s up to the government to ban the sale of fur..ALL fur, hide, etc. and set in place that animals should only be killed for food, etc. and it must be done in the most painless and humane way possible. Until then..let people do their jobs and support their families in the only way they can and yes Ke$ha..there’s a bottle of Jack nearby, go brush your teeth with it, get hammered and puke on all over your celebrity friends furs, lmao.

  14. Shocked • April 16, 2011 @ 7:25 PM

OMG, did anyone who is defending the seal hunt actually watch the video? Who cares if it’s just a rogue party, did anyone watch the part where they weren’t actually dead and they were rolling around in their own blodd. DEFENSELESS, SCARED, DYING… anyone who thinks for a second you can justify what I just watched in taht minute and a half clip by saying it’s a way of life, it’s a living is immoral, inhuman and has NO empathy or feelings AT ALL. You are a waste of space, educate yourself, get off the alcohol, get a JOB and get a life. As a Canadian, I am embarrassed and ashamed that anyone would think that what I just watched is okay. You people are sick.

  15. Shocked • April 16, 2011 @ 7:26 PM

    *blood

  16. Coop • April 16, 2011 @ 7:52 PM

What about species like rhinos that have almost been completely desimated?I guess they’re not as cute and cuddly as baby seals.

  17. Spanky • April 17, 2011 @ 10:21 AM

Wow, once again the Peta terrorists strike! BABY SEALS ARE NOT HUNTED! I repeat, baby seals are not hunted, there pelts were outlawed back the late 1970’s! Yes you morons who still fall for the crap that Peta the terrorists crap out is propaganda 30 years old. Wake up and get a brain and learn about your own country from Canadians and not terrorist Americans! The seal hunt is the most regulated hunt in the world and if a hunter is caught killing a seal with white fur or a pregnant/nursing mother they lose there hunting license and everything they have hunted is confiscated. Those consequences mixed with no buyers for the pelts make hunters very careful of what they kill. Also do to global warming, the ice flows are smaller and make it very difficult to spike the seals anymore so hunters now shoot them from a distance like most other animals.

You idiots have to remember that PETA is a business, and they choose to go after the seal hunt because they can sell the cute seals to donors better then ugly animals. They don’t care about the animals, they only care about the money rolling in. If you don’t believe me then why do they need a multi-million dollar head office that was custom built instead of a cheaper rental property. They are a terrorist organization that terrorizes legit businesses in order to make money for themselves, PETA = EVIL!

  18. jane • April 17, 2011 @ 2:36 PM

To L1fless: Overfishing is a man created problem, so to hunt another species to lessen our impact is no solution at all!Our unwillingness to understand and accept the consequences of our actions is poisoning and destroying the world we live in, but most of us feel that as long as we can indulge as much as we can right now, the hell with tomorrow! While ingenuity and technology gave us an edge over other species, ethics never kept up with our advancement. We are still governed by the basest of impulses: greed. For most of us there is never enough, there is no limit to the want, thus we feel justified in our abuse of the world. And yes, it is all conected, cows, and chickens, and all!

  19. christina • April 17, 2011 @ 7:53 PM

I completely agree. As a Canadian I am mortified that this practice still exists. There is absolutely no good reason in this day and age that this should be happening.

  20. L1feless • April 18, 2011 @ 11:36 AM

Jane that is correct overfishing is a man created problem. One which I am certain those fisherman on the East coast who are no longer fishing wish hadn’t happened. This doesn’t fix the issue that their are foreign nationals who continue to fish in areas which Canada is trying to conserve and bring back normal and stable fish populations. The rest of your post however was nothing more than a coherent rant with no definitive point made at the end of it. I for one cannot speak to the details of the videos (yes I did watch them all) my fear is that these are examples of bad practices by a select few and being portrayed as the norm in that industry.

  21. jane • April 18, 2011 @ 2:35 PM

To L1feless: you are right, I did run out of steam and gave up on quite connecting the dots on the previous post, mainly because I believe that one either preaches to the choir, or fights the windmills in the end, and the result is the same: you expand a lot of energy and mostly change nothing- the people that have the same belief as you already know what you are saying, and the ones that dont agree are rarely dissuaded in their convictions, no matter the argument you offer. However, I read enough of your posts to know that you are able to follow my rant to its conclusion, just as I can follow your leap to foreign nationals fishing in Canadian waters, which still does not justify your previous point of supporting seal hunts to reduce fish depletion.

  22. L1feless • April 18, 2011 @ 3:26 PM

Jane: Fish depletion is poor argument to support my stance you are correct but I do believe that the others which I mentioned hold up much better. I was able to follow your stance on the seal hunt to its conclusion. I suppose the only response I have is your stance is obviously one of compassion for living things. I am also assuming (hopefully not incorrectly) that based on your comments you must be a vegan. I think that is an extraordinarily lifestyle choice one which I personally do not live but respect a great deal. Keeping in line with your compassion for living things (a leap here) humans included how would you propose those whom are native to where the seal hunt takes place make a living? How could/ can we as a nation best support them?

Directed at several others posting: The seal meat is not only used for furs. There is/ was a recent news broadcast on CBC where China has reached a trade agreement to import seal meat. Based on the numbers and quantities mentioned there will be little which will go to waist.

  23. C-Dub • April 18, 2011 @ 10:03 PM

Seals are not hunted. The poachers are the cause of that. PETA has their ideas out there, but some are a little skewed to keep their name on people’s list of ‘important’ animal saving COMPANIES and also it’s just easy to pick a cute animal to keep reminding people it’s a bad thing to do.

Regarding cows/chickens, etc… Sadly the baby seals are not food, it’s the pelts so let’s not put them in the same category as mass bred animals for 7 billion people’s consumption. Not everyone is a vegitarian. This will not change, at least any time soon.

Well let’s just not kill baby seals. Let’s make an industry on selling seal meat to the chinese like that CBC special.

  24. Nancy • April 29, 2011 @ 8:23 PM

I got a better idea..why doesn’t someone come along and club all of you in the head? 😀
