Lady Gaga triumphs at VMAs

Lady Gaga won five prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) last night. The outrageous pop star triumphed in all the categories she was nominated in. Gaga’s successful night started on the white carpet, where she was presented with trophies for Best Dance Video for her song Bad Romance, and Best Collaboration Video for her work with Beyoncé Knowles on Telephone.  She broke into sobs during her acceptance speech, thanking her fans, whom she calls “little monsters.”

“Tonight little monsters, we’re the cool kids at the party,” Gaga said. The star then changed into a dress and shoes made of raw meat to accept awards for Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. Other big winners were Eminem for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop video for his song Not Afraid, Jared Leto’s band 30 Seconds to Mars, which received Best Rock Video, and Justin Bieber, who was named Best New Artist. Bieber also sang a free show outside the event, to the delight of his screaming fans.

One of the most talked-about events of the night was the mature way Taylor Swift accepted rapper Kanye West’s apology for his behavior at last year’s VMAs, when he hijacked her acceptance speech, saying that Beyoncé deserved the award instead of Swift. Taylor performed her song “Innocent” and appeared to be offering an olive branch to Kanye when she sang: “Everyone of us has messed up, too… I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new. Thirty-two and still growing up now; who you are is not what you did. You’re still an innocent.” Although West has written a song to apologize, rather than perform that song, he once again did himself no favors, instead closing the show with a song that went: “Let’s have a toast to the douchebags/ Let’s have a toast to the a–holes.” Must have been singing to himself.

That’s disgusting. If she wants to turn off fans, wearing a meat dress has done the trick.
