Leonardo DiCaprio considered for Hamlet

The Great Gatsby isn’t even officially out yet and Baz Luhrmann is already starting to ponder future collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio. At the top of the list is Hamlet. The Hollywood Reporter quotes Luhrmann as saying, “To me, Gatsby is the American Hamlet. What else could we possibly do as a follow-up?” and he described the possible project as “a dream at this point.” The idea isn’t that far-fetched; Luhrmann and DiCaprio have already worked on a Shakespeare adaptation together – Romeo + Juliet in 1996 . That year, Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet was also released. It had a stellar cast, including the likes of Branagh himself, Julie Christie, Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Kate Winslet, and Robin Williams, among many others, and Luhrmann would be hard put to arrange a better one than that. Hamlet was also the basis for Walt Disney’s The Lion King. Meanwhile, if you want to see Leo on the big screen, catch The Great Gatsby, which hits theaters this Friday. ~ Cassie Jasinski

I think he should take a break. Also, he’s probably too old for Hamlet by now, unless he wants to play him onstage.
