Leonardo DiCaprio donates $1M to save tigers

By Alexandra Heilbron on November 24, 2010 | 13 Comments

The World Wildlife Fund announced this week that Leonardo DiCaprio has donated $1 million to save tigers. DiCaprio will also attend this week’s summit to save tigers hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin held in St. Petersburg and attended by heads of government. They’re expected to announce a Global Tiger Recovery Program. “It’s been a pleasure to work with Leo.  He cares deeply about the fate of tigers and the human communities with whom they share their habitat. He is committing his time, his wealth, and most importantly, his talent to this cause,” said Carter Roberts, president and CEO of World Wildlife Fund. “His financial commitment will spark urgent on-the-ground conservation for tigers.” DiCaprio says: “Illegal poaching of tigers for their parts and massive habitat loss due to palm oil, timber and paper production are driving this species to extinction. If we don’t take action now, one of the most iconic animals on our planet could be gone in just a few decades. By saving tigers, we can also protect some of our last remaining ancient forests and improve the lives of indigenous communities.”

I agree, C-Dub – what he’s doing is inspirational. He doesn’t have to do it, but he chooses to. Keep up the good work Leonardo!

I just read that there won’t be any more tigers in a few years — I hope they can help them.

    A class act.

I think it is a class act, but I don’t understand how money can save Tigers?

Sorry his donating to tigers doesn’t impress me. There are so many causes that have to do with the American people’s needs. For Example. School breakfast programs, abuse centers, on and on. What a much better way to help than animals such as the tigers.

Sorry, but kathy learn to open your mind. Why do american people (this is a canadian site as well by the way) deserve more help then a species on the verge of extinction? What makes humans more important then any other species? Humans mess up the world for most other creatures on this planet for personal gain. What isn’t a better cause then to give another species a chance to exist?

Well said Ian. I’m tired of people putting down those who choose to help animals, whether domestic or wild.

Leo has always been a favourite actor of mine, and I’m glad to see he is as caring as he is talented.

Congratulations to Leonardo on helping these extremely beautiful cats. Now if we could only educate the people who harvest the parts and organs of wild life only to be sold on the black market,to countries like China. There are so many animals who also need help such as the Orangutan. The mountain gorilla who are killed for their meat to be sold at markets and whose feet and paws are used to make ash trays!Maybe if more people donated to the WWF we would be able to stop this barbarism of our wildlilfe. Yes I am a member of the WWF!

Believe it or not, Americans are not the most important cause to donate to, and I might also add that it is greed and materialism that caused their problems in the first place. And obviously money is needed to fund those that are doing the conserving and the educating. Its not free to save a forest or a species. Frankly, all the help in the world for social programs won’t make a damn difference if we don’t do something about our atrocious environmental practices first; and when I say ours, I mean the world, not just North America.
