Leonardo DiCaprio raises $38 million in charity auction

The box office success of The Great Gatsby is not the only thing that Leonardo DiCaprio has to be proud of this week. On Monday evening, the actor and Christie’s Auction House hosted a fundraiser to raise money for environmental and conservation programs. The event exceeded expectations when it took in $38 million, far more than projections of approximately $18 million. After the auction, Christie officials said this event may have been their highest-grossing charity auction of all time. Leonardo is known as an environmental activist who focuses on protecting endangered species and wildlife. The actor explained the importance of the event to attendees and press in a statement, saying, “Despite the significant efforts of organizations and individuals all over the world, our modern way of life has caused unprecedented devastation to our oceans, our forests and our wildlife. Each of these natural systems is critical to our way of life: They provide us with the food that we eat, the air that we breathe and the natural resources we need to survive. The time to protect them is long overdue. I am very grateful to Christie’s, Loic Gouzer and the artists who contributed great works of art for making this auction possible.” ~ Stacy Raivich

Zuh one order of magnitude (x10) would be $380 million, which he does not have. Two would be $3.8 billion, and three would be $38 billion. Four would be $380 billion, or more than the net worth of the five richest people on the planet combined. The real issue here is that how much of that $38 million actually goes towards the cause?
