This weekend is the perfect opportunity to go see a movie, with three big ones opening today, as well as one limited release. Mark Wahlberg impresses once again in the war movie Lone Survivor, an action-packed film in which SO1 Marcus Luttrell (Wahlberg) and his team set out to kill a Taliban leader. Based on Luttrell’s bestselling memoir, it details his struggle for survival. Lone Survivor opens everywhere today. Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts join forces in the comedy-drama August: Osage County, a dark tale of a dysfunctional family’s reunion after their father goes missing. The film’s spectacular ensemble cast is sure to stir some award buzz, with the leading ladies both nominated for a Golden Globe. August: Osage County is set for a wide release in theaters today. Also opening wide today is Her, a sci-fi spin on the typical boy-meets-girl story. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Theodore Twombly, a shy man who falls in love with his computer’s operating system following a heartbreak. Get the showtimes for the Golden Globe-nominated film here. Set for a limited release in Toronto and Ottawa today is Gabrielle, a Quebecois film about a musically gifted girl with Williams Syndrome who tries to gain her independence. Gabrielle Marion-Rivard and Alexandre Landry star in this drama. Gabrielle opens January 17 in Edmonton and January 24 in Vancouver. ~Yara Matar
