The white, “cotton drill” Levi Strauss & Co. pants Mark Hamill wore in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope were auctioned off by Nate D. Sanders Fine Autographs & Memorabilia this week for $36,100. Although Nate D. Sanders himself originally estimated they would fetch between $70,000 to $100,000, they brought in approximately half of the lower end of that expected price. There were 13 bids on the pants, which have been auctioned off twice before by Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction houses. Mark Hamill, who played Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars movies, wore the pants in the award-winning 1977 film. He spoke about them, saying they were “just bleached Levi’s with the tag still in them.” They weren’t exactly normal Levi’s though – they were customized by Bermans & Nathans in London for Luke Skywalker’s costume and even had dirt stains added to them to give them a convincingly battered and worn look. Despite the fact that they didn’t sell for the expected price, the jeans are still an incredible piece of movie memorabilia. ~Cassie Jasinski
