Madonna promised there would be no wardrobe malfunctions at her halftime performance during last night’s Super Bowl — we all remember Janet Jackson’s famous wardrobe slip-up in 2004. There may not have been any bare body parts revealed but the act still managed to stir up a little controversy thanks to rapper M.I.A., who gave the audience the finger after joining Madonna and guest star Nicki Minaj for their performance of Madonna’s latest single, “Give Me All Your Luvin.” NBC wasn’t able to censor it in time and M.I.A.’s middle finger was broadcast to the world, ticking off the Parents Television Council. “It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer,” wrote PTC’s presdient, Tim Winter.
Despite the obscene gesture, Madonna and her famous friends put on an entertaining show. The pop queen, led on stage by a band of Roman soldiers, opened with some of her classic hits, including a mash-up of “Music” with LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I know It.” She also welcomed Cee Lo Green on stage for a choir-backed rendition of her 1989 hit, “Like a Prayer.” If you missed last night’s show, check out the video below for the full performance.
