Manchester by the Sea wins big at National Board of Review awards

Moonlight may have snagged the big win at the Gotham Awards earlier this week, but Manchester by the Sea‘s momentum is steadily building with its Best Film honor from the National Board of Review.

Kenneth Lonergan‘s emotional grief drama also earned wins in the Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Breakthrough Performance – Male (Lucas Hedges) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan) categories.

The Best Director prize went to Barry Jenkins for Moonlight. The coming-of-age drama’s central female star, Naomie Harris, earned recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category, besting favorite Viola Davis (Fences).

The Best Actress race featured a surprise win for Amy Adams. The Arrival star trumped frontrunners Natalie Portman (Jackie) and Emma Stone (La La Land).

Awards veteran Jeff Bridges was honored with the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his work in the gritty Western drama Hell or High Water.
