By Alexandra Heilbron on July 22, 2010 | 28 Comments

Bob Marley’s son, Grammy Award-winning musician Ziggy Marley, along with co-writer Joe Casey and artist Jim Mahfood are producing a pot-powered superhero named Marijuanaman, which will be released to stores on April 20, 2011.  Ziggy will make an appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, July 24, signing Marijuanaman posters with Berkeley publisher Image Comics from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The official synopsis for the comic book reads: Ziggy’s new superhero, Marijuanaman, is from a planet that is in desperate need of THC. Marijuanaman seeks to save Earth’s marijuana fields from destruction by the drug company PharmeXon, and thus saving his home planet from destruction. “I have been reading comics since I was a little boy in Jamaica,” Ziggy states. “I am very excited to be a part of Image Comics, Comic-Con, and the comic book community.”

  2. bubba • July 22, 2010 @ 2:39 PM

Whats next Crack-man or Opium boy?? do you really think we shoud be glamourizing a druggie as a superhero. And afterall marijuana is said to be a gateway drug…

I may be 65 but by heaven I can’t imagine when the destruction of moral values will end. What a sad shape this world is in. Where is the responsibility for your own actions premise? Drugs are drugs, period. Marijuana is definitely a gateway drug. Drugs such as alcohol and smoking do not produce violence. I am not saying they are right by any means but when was the last time you heard of a drinker or smoker killing someone for the product? Never, right? To bad the penalties for drug possession does not match the crime.

Will this comic be sold in the back of the store? Up high in the shelves near the restricted porn or can my kid buy it no problem and walk out with it in a brown paper bag? Next why don’t we have the underground Nazi propaganda comics out on the shelves? You might think they are two totally different topics, but really they are not. Both are promoting something illegal and deemed crimial. Marijuana might be ‘soft’ drug but come on. I REALLY do not want my kid looking at the colourful pictures and getting the idea of doing it from another media source. It’s bad enough it’s in movies and tv shows and can see it just walking around your city. I’m in BC, it’s everywhere. I’m not a prude, i’ve done it on ocassion, but I really don’t feel the need to cartoonize it unless it to is restricted for people under 18yrs of age.

Chill out people! Don’t panic whrn you hear the word marijuana. It’s been around longer than any of you and has many beneficial uses. Educate yourself to lose these kinds of ignorant reactions. You just might learn something. Then you can teach your children and trust them to make their own informed choices. If you bring your kids up with morals and values, they will do the right thing.

Holy balls of cheese, that is genius!

  7. Eeeeeh • July 22, 2010 @ 5:37 PM

Bubba, up yours. I take it you’ve never actually tried it?

  8. Ally • July 22, 2010 @ 7:11 PM

    Bubba
almost everyone smokes pot, the first time I tried it I was 14, and now im 18. And I smoke it every once in a while. It’s good to take the edge off, and it’s less harmful than alcohol is. I think this is great for Ziggy to make a comic book about marijuana maybe the prude people will just chill out and smoke a joint.

  9. Thibz • July 22, 2010 @ 8:49 PM

thats a lie id say almost everyone has tried pot! i wouldnt say almost everyone smokes it. Thats kind of an uneducated guess Ally!

  10. Red • July 23, 2010 @ 1:54 AM

My psych prof says people who do recreational drugs just can’t deal with the real world. This brings his statement to mind. And I agree with C-dub, whatever I will be called after this post.

  11. Amanda • July 23, 2010 @ 12:09 PM

Yeah, that’s not accurate, Ally. The fact that you think almost everyone smokes pot means you do, and the people you know do it I guess, cause being a pothead you must like being around people who are like you – stoned. I don’t smoke pot and none of my friends or family do.

  12. Ally • July 23, 2010 @ 10:27 PM

Uh, I am not a pothead, alot of people smoke weed it is very popular. And I said I smoke it once in a while. That doesn’t make me a pothead. And you and your friends and family don’t smoke it, but that doesn’t mean no one does. Alot of people do, and just because most poeple smoke pot doesn’t mean they can’t deal with the real world, it’s just fun to smoke, it takes the edge off things. It doesn’t mean that everyone that smokes it can’t deal with life, some people maybe do but not alot. If you don’t smoke it than you don’t know how awesome it makes you feel when you do it, so don’t judge. We do it for the rush

  13. Sara • July 24, 2010 @ 4:36 AM

    so dumb.

  14. mister A • July 24, 2010 @ 8:43 AM

lmao thats awesome. all u whiners go away. honestly marijuana is the least harmful drug of all.

how many people have died from smoking pot? 0

how many have died from alcohol overdose?

and how many have died from cigarettes? more than you can imagine.
if you would teach your kid good values he’ll make the right decision. banning things isnt the answer
pot is the drug of relaxation. it doesnt make you lazy or unmotivated or addicted. its just people that are already lazy that fall for it.

  15. Rob • July 24, 2010 @ 1:48 PM

This comic will have the least amount of pages. It’s probably Marijuanaman sitting on the couch, giggling alot and eating a bag of oreo cookies.

  16. sgt.pepper. • July 24, 2010 @ 7:14 PM

In late 50’s and early 60’s the government covered the streets and newspapers with anti-marijuana propaganda that was based on lies and unsubstantiated “scientific research.” It’s kind of sad to see that the negative stigma around pot still exists even after a lot of properly documented research states that pot is not nearly as bad for you as people think. Marijuana is a natural plant and it’s smoked in it’s most natural form. It’s not a gateway drug. Studies have shown that tobacco smoking is a better predictor of concurrent illicit hard drug use than smoking cannabis. If people did their research before speaking about against pot then there would be a lot less voices out there. Pot is not a bad thing. A lot of people smoke it. A lot of people you wouldn’t expect.

Kathy, you’re comment left me a little shocked. Your statement that “Drugs such as alcohol and smoking do not produce violence” couldn’t be farther from the truth. Anyone can see that. How many people have been killed or seriously injured by a drunk driver? How many victims of sexual assault or domestic violence were abused by someone that was drinking? I’ll admit that smoking isn’t violent but the deaths due to smoking and even secondhand smoke are astounding. There are numerous forms of cancer that you can get just from smoking. If cancer happens to run in your family your chances of developing it become far greater if you’re a smoker. It seems to me that the worst thing that happen from smoking pot is that you end up on the couch with a bag of chips for 5 hours. Yes, marijuana is a drug. So why does that automatically make it “bad” for you. Aspirin is a drug. It’s a pain-killer. So is morphine. They use aspirin and morphine in hospitals. Marijuana is a natural pain-killer as well. That’s why it’s prescribed to help cancer patients that are going through chemo-therapy. It also curbs the nausea and encourages the patient to eat. Marijuana is also used to help recovering cocaine addicts because pot helps curb the effects of withdrawl. Recovering anorexics are also encouraged to try marijuana because it helps them gain weight. Marijuana does a lot more good than it does harm. Hopefully a lot more people will begin to see it. If you click my name it will take you to the wikipedia page on Marijuana. Educate yourself and then form your opinions.

Oh for the love of all thats good and holy. The ignorance of the facts these days.
    http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj007.htm (myths and facts)
http://www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/mj004.htm (the timeline of marijuana. Interesting read.)
This just about throws all of your crazy facts out the window, prohibitionists.
Kathy, something tells me you were forced to watch the propaganda film Reefer Madness as a teenager. But you should realize the ridiculousness of it now, youre 65 for cripes sake! Youre talking about violence as a result of drug dealers and cartels, not the drug itself. If marijuana were decriminalized, such violence wouldnt take place (in relation to marijuanna, anyways). Most fights Ive heard of breaking out while under the influence of something, alcohol is usually the culprit. And yes, I have heard of someone drinking alcohol killing someone: when they drive drunk, among other random, horrible acts of violence (spouse or child abuse, for example).
The stigma around marijuana is all because of propaganda that has no basis in science or common sense. There was a time when the production of marijuana and hemp was encouraged by the government. The only reason its illegal now is because racists back in the day thought that white women would be encouraged to mix with black males if they smoked marijuana. It’s all a result of blatant racism.
Seriously, do some research before you start spouting lies and half-truths the DEA and prohibitionists like to throw out as facts like word-vomit. Its making ME vomit.
Also, if someone knocks back a drink every now and then, would you call them an alcoholic? No. So stop calling me, and others like me, a stoner just because we roll a joint now and then. Im still a functional part of society. I work, I go to school, I pay my taxes, and I use my brain and think for myself, not lies someone passes on.
Thats more than most of you can say.
Overgrow the Government AND FREE MARC EMERY!

I think the point is being missed completely! I dont care about the drug use issue truly children are going to seek its uses wether we like it or not.Should we go out of our way to may it look cartoonish NO!!!! Would you be satisfied if there were a brightly colored cereal box marked “POT- O’s” Its really the promotion that Iam worried about. And think of that the next time your going in for surgery hope your suregeon smoked some weed to take the “edge off” enjoy the after life since his sences were dulled and yours were lost bone head.

  19. Ally • July 25, 2010 @ 8:32 AM

    sgt pepper
You are totally right!!! I just wish all these prudes would stop acting like its a death wish smoking pot. ITS FUN

  20. Ally • July 25, 2010 @ 8:38 AM

Bubba, have you even tried it? If you havent than stop making assumptions that arent true. Be real with what you type, and were you trying to joke when you said that remark about a doctor smoking up then giving surgery? Cause if it is that it was a shitty joke! And if your not, then I am pretty sure doctors would get fired if they were baked while performing surgery. So stop making it out to be more serious than it is

  21. Ally • July 25, 2010 @ 9:11 AM

The UN estimated that in 2004 about 162 million people
use cannabis annually, and about 22.5 million use it on a daily basis

  22. sgt.pepper. • July 25, 2010 @ 8:38 PM

Bubba, are you kidding me? Do you really think that if pot use was tolerated and legal that a surgeon would smoke a joint before preforming surgery? I’m high right now and even I can appreciate the ridiculousness of that “joke.” Sounds like you need to “take the edge off,” wanna toke? I’ve got a big box of POT-O’s in the cupboard that we can munch on after 🙂

You say that you’re worried about the promotion of this comic book, but let me tell you; there are far worse things then pot that’s being marketed towards the kids of today. Like smoking and drinking. With shows like “The Jersey Shore” gaining popularity, kids are bombarded with alcohol and smoking. A recent study founded that approximately 2.6 million binge drinkers in the United States are between the ages of 12-17. Another study found that the number of teens being admitted to hospital for alcohol poisoning has increased 20% each year for the last 8 years. And according to Health Canada’s yearly study on underage smokers over 14% of teens between 15-19 are smokers. That’s just over 300,000 kids. So why don’t you think about that next you time go see and James Bond movie with your kid and he asks you what a martini is.

  23. Sue A • July 26, 2010 @ 8:39 AM

Marijuana is not a “GATEWAY DRUG” Tobacco is, check your facts buddy. Its a silly comic I’m sure but pots harmless loosen the sphincter.

  24. bubba • July 26, 2010 @ 2:40 PM

Ally your taking all this way to serious i dont give a rats arse who uses drugs or who doesnt .We have to be more responsible for the media images we release to our children. If this comic is going to be available to adults only then i guess there is no further discussion.
On a more personal note perhaps the people around you smoke pot cause your just not interesting enough while they are sober.

  25. Ally • July 26, 2010 @ 5:41 PM

    Buuba,
Im just ststing the obvious! And you don’t know me!
Why can’t you understand, I said I smoke it sometimes, and I have lot’s of friends that don’t smoke it. I usually smoke it with my older brother.

  26. DylanA • July 27, 2010 @ 6:22 AM

    ok bubba:

    if pot was legal.

dont u think there would be an age restriction on it?

Tobacco is 18 but most people smoke it at 16-17.

    at the moment its not.
    so.
kids are going to have to find a dealer
pot costs lots of money so they’ll need a huge allowance
whos going to give them that, you dad?

its not like marijuana is easy to get. i hope you realize drugs do cost a lot of money and its not like kids have more than $10 anyway.

and if they do its YOUR responsibility to teach them about making good decisions.

  27. Audrey Hill • July 27, 2010 @ 2:35 PM

We know many professional people who smoke a small joint in the evening, much like some folk have a glass of wine.
It does not affect their ability to run their companies.
We are far more concerned about the extremely violent video games that are freely obtainable by our youth.
These games should be banned for all, they are sick.

  28. bubba • August 1, 2010 @ 8:35 AM

DYLAN A …………R U A MORON????? Pot is one of the easiest drugs to get there is, in fact it is harder to get cigarettes then it is to get pot. Kids dont need a large allowance to buy the drug either because its one of the cheapest drugs to buy also . Not really the point of my end of the conversation perhaps chime in when you have something intellegent to say.
