Mel Gibson returns to acting

Mel GibsonMel Gibson is going to play his first movie role in six years in the thriller Edge of Darkness. He’ll portray a cop investigating his daughter’s murder. Gibson, 52, has not worked since his drunk driving arrest last year, when he released a stream of anti-Semitic remarks at the arresting officer. He has since apologized and has gotten help for his alcoholism.

Before that, he put aside acting to concentrate on directing movies such as The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. The devout Catholic apologized for his hateful words and chalked it up to alcoholism. He’s also slated to star in two more movies this year — Same and George and Under and Alone.  Edge of Darkness begins filming in Boston this August.
