Melanie Amaro was crowned the first winner of the American version of X Factor last night. Coached and chosen to be in the competition by Simon Cowell, the 19-year-old beat runner-up Josh Krajcik, 30, winning a $5 million contract with Simon’s record label and an appearance in a Pepsi commercial. It was ironic that Amara won, because she was initially sent home from the competition by Cowell following the Judges’ Houses stage. He then had a change of mind and went personally to her home to invite her back. He said: “I stood there like a lemon for 30 seconds while she stared at me, and then quietly said, ‘Yes, I’ll do it.’ Now I’m seeing her behind me, she’s got the confidence.” Melanie, who burst into tears and was unable to speak after hearing that she’d won, finally collected herself enough to say: “I want to say America, thank you for giving this girl an opportunity.” Vote in our poll….
