Meryl Streep donates to Viola Davis charities

Meryl Streep has more than a new golden Oscar trophy — she’s also got a heart of gold. The morning after winning her Best Actress award, Streep made a generous donation on behalf of her own charity, Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts, to two worthy causes in the name of fellow nominee and friend Viola Davis. The first was to the Segue Institute for Learning in Central Falls, Rhode Island, where Davis grew up. The school has been struggling to stay afloat after being forced to sell their building because of financial strains in the city. Streep’s $10,000 contribution will be a big driving force in implementing a plan to keep their doors open. Later that same day, a second $10,000 cheque was delivered to Rhode Island’s Upward Bound college prep program. It was the largest sum the organization has ever received.
