Miley Cyrus’ new adult video – too sexy?

By Alexandra Heilbron on May 6, 2010 | 50 Comments

Miley Cyrus is trying to make the transition from Disney pop star to adult artist, and the first step seems to be the video for her new song, “Can’t Be Tamed.” Some are saying the video is too sexy, considering that Miley is only 17 and most of her fans are in their pre-teens. What do you think? Is it time for Miley to shed her “kiddie image?” Is this new video too risqué?

Her BEST video to date. Song ain’t so bad either.

  2. John • May 6, 2010 @ 10:23 AM

Um, what’s too sexy? If someone didn’t say her age I wouldn’t have known. Pretty.

  3. Aaron Moxley • May 6, 2010 @ 12:34 PM

But the thing is she is seventeen and that’s the problem, a lot of little girls watch her show. What message is she sending the girls out there, be like this and do these and you can be popular and famous. She is too young to do a video like that. She doesn’t need to do a video like that to get her music across. She should enjoy being a teen not be forced to grow up so fast. Alot of us parents and media force our kids to grow up too fast. It seems that all the girls that start on Disney end up (pardon my language)slutting it out.

  4. Brittany • May 6, 2010 @ 12:58 PM

Shes expressing her opinion whats wrong with that? seriously now is that everyone expects of her to be “Hannah” for the rest of her life? Miley isnt hannah, not anymore shes growing up and people need to stand back and just watch becauses shes beautiful and smart and her family is supporting her and her fans have grown up with her. She isnt lindsay lohan or mischa barton , miley is responsible and if the parents cant see that than there just stupid sad and pathetic because they them selves were that age once like come on the song is catchy and the video is edgy in a very COOL way!!!! Thumbs way up Miley dont listen to anybody and just follow your heart!!!!!

  5. Diane • May 6, 2010 @ 1:01 PM

The song is okay. If you like theatrics over music, then you’ve got it here. Too sexy… no.. she’s just growing up and perhaps musically doing the type of music that she likes. But, i’m not sure i like the message… Can’t be Tamed… basically, do what you want… not sure if that’s a good message, no matter how old you are. Be strong, yes, be confident, yes, “can’t be tamed”.. what does that really mean? Perhaps it’s perfect… as a typical rebellious teen.. just expressing herself.

  6. Caroline • May 6, 2010 @ 1:02 PM

She is 17 going to be 18!
Do you know what girls 15 years old and younger are doing now a days!
This video isn’t even close to being “slutty”

  7. DD • May 6, 2010 @ 1:33 PM

Turning into another Britney or copying Lady Gaga, too too bad, she’s a really good singer

  8. Jackie • May 6, 2010 @ 1:36 PM

Britney Spears was seventeen when she made her debut, in a sexy school girl outfit and singing ‘hit me baby one more time’ If there wasn’t a message that was screaming f**k me than, than why is everyone freaking out now with Miley Cryus

  9. Lance • May 6, 2010 @ 1:41 PM

Hot Video profile Miley coming of age as a young Lady. Following in the steps of Diva’s – Brittany Spears,Lady GaGa, Madonna. Raw, Eye Catching, transition…

  10. Bev • May 6, 2010 @ 2:45 PM

I agree with Aaron. This is too sexy for a seventeen yr old. She looks at least 10 yrs older. I’m surprised her parents went along with this. If this was Madonna singing this, I would understand, but not Miley. This is a complete turnaround of her character. She does not portray a wholesome virtuous girl in this video. The song itself is good, but songs are supposed to depict what a person feels.

  11. Linda Mansfield • May 6, 2010 @ 3:54 PM

Rhianna was only 16 or 17 when she did her first big hit. They had to wait and use the club where they shot it, until after hours because she was underage for the club during open hours.

For older teens these days that could be considered tame. Not a huge amount of skin showing, and the character she is presenting appears strong and defiant of being ‘Caged’, so not a bad image to use at this point. Pretty little girls grow up, if we let them and teaching teen girls to be strong is a good thing. It makes them less likely to be a passive victim of those who want to use them.

Doesn’t look like the type of kid who would stand to be bullied into committing suicide does she?

  12. JAG • May 6, 2010 @ 4:01 PM

She is just the next Brittany Spears. Miley can’t really sing – she lip syncs everything (even in concert) I saw a video of her that someone in the crowd took in NYC and she can’t sing at all. She definitely can act though and that is what this video is. Not much of a song. no substance and way too synthesized. Good video though and Brittany was younger that 17 when she did Hit Me Baby One More Time.

  13. Andrea • May 6, 2010 @ 4:12 PM

Bullcrap, JAG, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Miley NEVER lipsyncs in concert. I saw her live and the songs were differently arranged from how they were on the cd and she has said that she will never lipsync. If she lipsynced, then when she was sick, she wouldn’t have had to cancel a show like she did last year. And btw, she has an amazing vocal range, I bet you’ve never even listened to her stuff.

  14. Jessesue • May 6, 2010 @ 5:31 PM

Miley is turning 18. Can we not just put the blame where blame truly lies?! If parents are letting little girls watch this then is it really Miley’s fault? Come on! Seriously? This is not a song written or directed towards little girls. Shame on parents for blaming her for watching a video for a song not appropriate for them.

  15. ugh • May 6, 2010 @ 5:54 PM

    I smell another Lohan.

  16. Britt • May 6, 2010 @ 6:00 PM

The fact is she is getting older. She is in the stage of finding out who she is, and what kind of artist she is. Look at Christina Aguilera. She started out clean then went to Xtina then to looking like shes from the 50’s or 60’s. Its a stage all people go threw. Whether you are a Celeb, or a normal person.
If you think the video is to sexy then its to sexy whatever, and most preteens dont really watch muchmusic or whatever music chanel. The song itself isnt bad, and you dont have to let your children watch the video.

  17. demigod • May 6, 2010 @ 6:04 PM

Miley just couldn’t take another year before rebelling and expressing all that pent-up angst! lol So contrived.
Did she hire Beyonce’s make-up crew?

  18. demigod • May 6, 2010 @ 6:07 PM

I wouldn’t say it’s too sexy, but it is suggestive.

  19. Thibz • May 6, 2010 @ 6:23 PM

So what…when she turns 18 the industry jumps over her to turn into a Sl**….?

  20. Thibz • May 6, 2010 @ 6:27 PM

and holly it sounds like a britany song!! All this music sounds the same BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Paul Wadge • May 6, 2010 @ 6:52 PM

Too sexy? It is time for her to leave the kid stuff at home and run with the crowd as they grow! Video was a little over done, but is that not her style? Loved it!

  22. NK • May 6, 2010 @ 7:35 PM

People seem to confuse the Hannah image with the Miley image. Fans of Hannah will still watch the show, and they can sanitize that all they want. But Hannah should not interfere with Miley’s career.

  23. Chris • May 6, 2010 @ 7:38 PM

omg shes turning into brittney….this needs to stop now…. really.

  24. saucysimone • May 6, 2010 @ 8:35 PM

    I agree – Britney wannabe…

  25. Sassy • May 6, 2010 @ 9:50 PM

Hmm Interesting but definately not unique.Seems like the same old generic videos as usual don’t think its her style to be quite honest. She has a voice that could be used to better use other than mainstream “pop”. I think another thing was what “transition” was there she went from Hannah Montana to rocking it in barely there garments. Her problem is she has the voice to captivate the audience use it in a classy way and stay away from the Brittany/Christina type music and videos.

  26. Dexter • May 6, 2010 @ 11:17 PM

    “the rarest creature on earth”?
i think that’s pushing it a little. honestly, you can find girls like her by the truck load anywhere. this whole concept of suddenly having to change your image just because you’re growing up is ridiculous. wouldn’t it be something for once to see how long a popstar can keep her clothes ON rather than how young she can take it off?

  27. Kevin • May 7, 2010 @ 1:42 AM

that video wasn’t as provocative as i thought it would be from these comments. she is breaking out of her shell and doing music she likes to do. so what if its just like Brittney Spears if thats what she wants to do who are we to say no? isnt music all about expression? let her express her music her way. Hannah Montana is finished now and its time for her to be her own person. Just because she got her start from disney doesnt mean she has to continue now that the show is over. Most people know her name and are gonna love or hate her no matter what she does so she might as well do it her way.

  28. Sandie • May 7, 2010 @ 10:14 AM

did i find it too sexy? no, a little provocative, but like Caroline up above said, “Do you know what girls 15 years old and younger are doing now a days!” I do. I live where there a lot of teens running around, and they make Miley look like a good little girl here.

I don’t understand why people feel the need to judge someone because they change the way they look in a music video. It’s about expressing herself and she is almost an adult!

Also, how is it her fault if parents aren’t teaching their children what is “appropriate” behavior for their age? Parents should be the role model, not some celebrity the kids see on tv

  29. 879807897 • May 7, 2010 @ 12:28 PM

This is disgusting. Yes, I know, she’s almost “grown-up” and yes “look at all the other people who are worse!” But the point HERE is that just because all these other ditzes are slutty–yes slutty, if they did that 40 years ago (and yes I know its not 40 years ago) people would have had an heart attack right there and died–doesn’t mean its right that she should be. So yea, she can do whatever the hell she wants, but honestly all she manages to show is two things: 1 that she’s incapable of making her own un-influenced decisions and 2 that she falsely believes–like so many other women singers–that sex-appeal matters more than the actual song.

  30. 879807897 • May 7, 2010 @ 12:29 PM

    which is sad and pathetic

  31. Red • May 7, 2010 @ 3:24 PM

I agree with so many of these comments. The video was meh.. another pop song to me. I can’t say I really like the message. If 12 year olds are already rebelling against their parents, why encourage it? I can see the long road ahead of her leading to the same place as the Bald Nitwit lol but I’m hoping that she can hold onto her own future and not let some corporation decide “what’s best” for her. I do agree with these last comments on how music should be more important than so called “sex appeal”. I don’t know many who even watch the music videos, and if the music isn’t strong enough, then it’s all about the video. Kinda backwards to me…

  32. The Critic • May 7, 2010 @ 7:17 PM

Who really cares? All I have to say is I wish she would shut her pie hole!

  33. mandee • May 7, 2010 @ 8:47 PM

i didnt really read any of the comments, just reds, thibiz and demigods.

my opinion is she seems like a cross between hilary duff and britney spears now. i wish she would come out with her own style and her own kind of music rather than following all of those before her. the songs she sang that were directed at a younger audience at least had inspiration in them, they at least sent out messages and tried to help our youth with their self esteem. really, what is this video or song saying? its not saying anything. its just sound. its boring, its already been done. she needs to rethink her plan and come up with something unique, she could probably change the world of pop if she took the time to actually consider what she was singing and doing and dressed like when she was on stage. i hope she turns out better than all the other young women that started out as singers.

  34. puttputt • May 7, 2010 @ 8:57 PM

kinda funny seeing avg chubster trying to be cool and sexy when she is just a avg 17 yr old who can’t sing or act

  35. Amy • May 8, 2010 @ 10:30 AM

puttputt, you think Miley is chubby? She’s a teenager who’s on the skinny side, did you actually look at her figure? If people like you are calling kids like her skinny, no wonder little girls are dying from anorexia.

  36. Tegan • May 8, 2010 @ 2:38 PM

personally I think she should take like two or three years off. Go to college, live a life without the fame of Hannah Montanna. Then come back and start over with a whole new career and image. Honestly she’s just a kid who needs to have a real childhood. I mean look at Leonardo decaprio after tiantic he quit acting, live a real life than came back and got a whole new fan base, and is better than ever. This is what I would suggest Miley do. That way we’re not fighting over whether or not she is too slutty, or too young too be doing songs like this. And maybe after her time off she’ll realize that acting and singing is her passion or that she really doesn’t enjoy it. but that’s just my opinion. Feel free to critizes me I honestly don’t give a damn.

  37. zippy • May 8, 2010 @ 7:59 PM

Oh for crying out loud, compared to a lot of what is out there this is practically disney.

As for can’t be tamed…someone was complaining about that.

What does it mean to BE tamed? It is to give in to someone ELSE’S judgement. That is exactly the sentiment of a 17 year old. She is supposed to be taking control of her own life. Unfortunately kids that grow up in nice sweet roles need to do something weird to break out of that and survive into adult roles.

Alyssa Mylano did a weird sex threesome in a strange vampyre movie to break her squeaky clean image and got cast in Charmed not to long after. (Which was also pretty tame.)

  38. Molly • May 8, 2010 @ 8:40 PM

For an average celebrity I don’t think the video is too sexy. Fact of the matter is Miley Cyrus came into singing/acting and being famous through Disney and her tv show aimed at children. She is still in her teens and always gaining new fans, of which a lot are children. Although I agree she should have the same choice as other girls her age, like Britney Spears or what-have-you, she still has and is still gaining fans who perceive her as a role model. What should be able to happen can’t happen that easily because she has taken on the challenge of being this role model, whether or not she wants it. Reality is rarely fair but I don’t think she should be promoting herself this way considering her following. All in all I think she should have given it more time and let her previous character die down a bit before the transformation.

  39. bobo • May 9, 2010 @ 1:36 AM

first things first–i dont like miley. i think shes a bad example to all of her fans (who, for the most part, are younger than 10 years old)
this video is one that is considered a great video in hollywood, and while i really dont like miley or her music, i think the video is great.
but that doesnt excuse the fact that she is 17 years old. that is one year older than me, and i could never picture myself acting the way she is.

maybe hollywood just forces kids to grow up too quickly

    or maybe not

  40. Italiana • May 9, 2010 @ 12:15 PM

She’s turning into Britney spears and lindsey lohan! It’s just everybodys use to seeing her all decent in kiddy channels that this sluttyness doesn’t suit her at allll, it’s not hot! But then again if her parents don’t care and arnt stopping her then who are we to say anything

  41. Liana • May 9, 2010 @ 12:21 PM

I don’t know why Miley is acting like this, you don’t see Selena gomaz or Demi lavoto acting like sluts and their ACTUALLY pretty! And have nice voices.

  42. Sharon • May 9, 2010 @ 1:05 PM

Everybody grows up and want to explore themselves and thats what she did and I think she looks sexy yet classy. As for now do not compare her to others (selena…etc). Give the others time and they will suprise you yet. People stop being hypocrites. She was not vulgar at all. I say good for her for being daring and enjoying every moment off it.

  43. Nathan • May 9, 2010 @ 4:27 PM

I say if your kids look up to these girls on TV, you parents are the problem…You’ve displayed to them that you are not “cool” or “hip” enough to relate to so they rely on people off the TV, BE PARENTS AND STOP BLAMING YOUR BAD PARENTING SKILLS ON THE ONES THAT AREN’T RAISING YOUR KIDS…secondly if you try to censor this young lady(slutty or not) your kids are still gonna be learning about this one way or another…Ps My first time I was fourteen and that was 11 years ago… I know that my cousin who is younger than I was fools around with his girlfriend…to sum up grow some nuts, man or amazon the f*&# up and raise your kids propper

  44. Kathy • May 9, 2010 @ 8:50 PM

This is too sexy! Most of Miley’s fans are pre-teens. My daughter is 9 & loves her. She is already so popular. She doesn’t need to do something this sexy to get more attention. She is a role model for these pre-teens & should remember that. She’s only 17! Everyone wants to grow up so fast. And if we are comparing her to Brittany Spears……well, think about what happened to her.
There could have been much better ideas to grab her fans’ attention & still be respectable and one & they could look up to.

  45. Sam • May 10, 2010 @ 1:51 AM

LOL..When seeking attention, Do the typical “Orgy” Music video…Some things just never change when it comes to female pop stars.

  46. Lloyd • May 12, 2010 @ 1:50 PM

That was unbelievable. However, we can’t say that we didn’t see this coming. She perfectly fits the archetype for your typical teenage pop sensation. They want to be taken seriously as adults, so they think trying to be sexy is the way to do that.

Realistically, who’s she trying to impress? No adults are really fans of her music unless their children listened to her. I doubt those parents are going to now be like “oh let’s take her seriously as a young lady after this!” All she’ll do is negatively influence those young girls out there that want to be like her to emulate this “sexy” persona.

And a lot of people are blaming the parents. Some blame does lie with the parents, however when you take on the mantle of being a “role model”, you need to take some of the blame as well. Miley knows her fan base. She knows the influence she has over them. You call it “growing up”, but I think it’s pretty immature and a little selfish on her part to carry herself like this. I’m a teacher and if the students who look up to me saw me running around drinking, smoking, what have you, what do you think would happen? Should I not be held responsible because, it’s the parent’s responsibility to raise their children properly?

  47. maddogface • May 14, 2010 @ 12:10 AM

I searched the video because I heard it was too sexy ;p. But it really wasn’t… QQ more if you think this is too sexy, go to a mall and see what girls younger than her are wearing, you might be in for a surprise

  48. kwander1 • May 15, 2010 @ 11:44 AM

I used to be a fan, but she has dissappointed me with this video. It’s too much!! that is not good.

  49. tasha21 • May 15, 2010 @ 10:30 PM

i love this song!!!! it pretty bed people are going around and saying stuff about miley who care what she looks like in the song she her own person….. i say that most of u people weren’t perfect at the age of seventeen SO stop being so rude and grow up!!!

  50. tributegirl • May 16, 2010 @ 1:04 PM

My daughter is the same age as Miley, and there’s no way in hell she’d be doing something like this. As if she’d want to.
