Miley Cyrus says she’s not your kid’s parent

Miley CyrusIn an interview in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Miley Cyrus reflects back on the scandal that erupted when she posed for Vanity Fair wearing a sheet. “Here, my parents are thinking they’re seeing a beautiful picture by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that? It doesn’t make sense to us because [my family] doesn’t look for negativity.” Cyrus, 17, told the fashion magazine: “My job is to be a role model, and that’s what I want to do, but my job isn’t to be a parent. My job isn’t to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I’m still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not. That’s just life.” She’s currently working on her next album, but wants it to be different than her previous releases. “I want to come out with an album that’s really who I am,” she says, but adds, “I don’t know exactly who that is yet.”

‘My job is to be a role model’? I beg to differ.

  2. Casey • January 8, 2010 @ 12:40 AM

The job of being a role model just kinda came with her actual career, at least she’s accepting that to thousands, she is one, whether or not we like it. She does make a good point though about kids.

  3. caroline • January 8, 2010 @ 2:31 AM

    She’s actually speaking the truth.

  4. mandee • January 8, 2010 @ 2:54 AM

she is very smart for her age and i agree with her completely. i dont care that it makes me sound kind of childish, i find a lot of her songs to be very inspiring and i hope that she inspires a lot of young men/women to grow up and be and do what they want to. her lyrics are amazing for young kids and young adults. they give you a confidence you wouldnt have if you didnt actually pay attention to what she was saying. im glad shes still willing to act her age and learn by making her own mistakes, even with the whole world expecting/demanding her to be perfect.

  5. Jo-Anne • January 8, 2010 @ 9:47 AM

way better role model than Jolie…

I agree, mandee, she’s done very well for such a young age and have no issues with her image…

  6. Marilyne • January 8, 2010 @ 12:30 PM

I do have an issue with her image, if she is going to be a role model for young people, she can’t act in an immoral way, otherwise the parents will stop their children from buying her CDs and watching her on TV and movies. I know that is what happened to Brittany Spears and her career is pretty much in the “toliet” now. She is another young celebrity that could not handle being famous!!!

  7. Wow... • January 8, 2010 @ 12:34 PM

She’s even smarter than some of the people that comment on these ‘stories’ on a regular basis.

  8. sam • January 8, 2010 @ 12:47 PM

shes right you know, I think people should give her a break. She’s a teen too just trying to grow up in this world, just because she is in the spot light. Doesn’t mean that she should have to grow up so fast that she basically has the personality of a 40 year old.

  9. nancy • January 8, 2010 @ 1:04 PM

    hey Joe-Anne,
I agree with what you commented about Miley!. However, don’t just compare Jolie witch every single ITEM!!!!!!!!
It shows you how low-steem you are. If you want to agree with what she said, just say agree! Don’t blame and compare with her! They are too different!!!!

  15. Jo-Anne • January 8, 2010 @ 2:53 PM

since you used the word immoral, Marilyne, what in particular do you find immoral about Miley?

p.s. I do not think Spears career is in the toilet, not by a long shot…

  16. ugh • January 8, 2010 @ 4:23 PM

Miley is right – she’s not the kids’ mother or father. If your child is copying Miley and listening to everything she says/does, maybe you should question your parenting.

There are role models, and there are pre-teen/teenaged addictions. The Miley and Hannah Montanah fads are destroying our youth… and so are the parents buying the concert and movie tickets.

Let her live her life, even if she turned into an underwear model it would be “her” fault, not the parents.

  17. demigod • January 8, 2010 @ 4:42 PM

She’s too young to be any kind of role model. What do kids have to ‘learn’ from her? How to be rich and famous? She’s inspiring hopeless dreams.

  18. mandee • January 8, 2010 @ 5:18 PM

demigod on January 8, 2010 4:42 PM well, the show sure doesnt teach them anything. but ive read the lyrics to the songs she sings for the show and for her cds and i think they are very inspirational and im glad my niece will listen to that kind of music. with how terrible the music is these days (with all of the swearing, all of the terrible lyrics, the lyrics about gangs, drugs, sex etc) mileys lyrics are a breath of fresh air for the younger generation and give them self esteem and hopes. i think hopeless dreams are only hopeless because the people pursuing them arent motivated or determined enough and they are too lazy to get what they want out of life. 😀 since we are friends these days ha ha, hope youre having a great day 😀 you too joanne!

  19. Kat • January 8, 2010 @ 5:40 PM

I don’t understand why people keep saying that she is a bad role model in the first place. Sure she’s done mistakes, but most teenagers have done the exact same thing before her. The only reason people think her mistakes are so aweful is because it’s posted in public for everyone to see. She’s at that age right now were she’s not sure who she is, she tries new things, and trying to figure out what she wants with herself.
My younger sister is the same age as her and trust me, things are the same with everyone.

As for what the tv show teaches the kids, if you watched a few episodes you might see that yes, you do learn a few things. Besides, I don’t know many shows out there that are fun to watch and ‘educational’ for kids from 10-14.

  20. I DONT LIKE------->Miley • January 8, 2010 @ 5:41 PM

k no offence or anything but the only reason y miley was acctually accepted into the music industry was because of her father. If she were to enter like everyone else did, she would’nt be as/soo famous. Plus, half the reason y shes famous is not even about what she does it’s the negetivity about her that makes her famous. I don’t see how she’s trying to be a role model yet she doesn’t even know who she really is and just because she got into the music industry, i don’t see y she had to start acting because she’s not good at either. I mean yea she has confidance but she just doesn’t have THE VOICE like Rihanna, Beyonce or Alicia Keys. She either needs more lessons or she needs to quit because like everyone’s saying, she’s still a kid. She doesn’t belong in that world.

Nice try, but as usual, WRONG-O. I was at work when those comments were made.

I’ll take Nancy’s 3:35 comment inviting tribute to respond one step further. Tribute, could you also please confirm that the comments made under the black name “nancy” were not me? Thanks.

  22. Diane • January 8, 2010 @ 8:59 PM

    We are being selfish?!
This coming from a constant publicity seeker!
No, Miley, your family doesn’t look for negativity, they look for exploitive opportunism!

  23. demigod • January 8, 2010 @ 10:06 PM

Yes Mandee, I get that..if we’re talking about her ‘positive/good natured’ image, why should it take a rich/famous teen (deservedly or not) to bear that responsibility? She’s no more mature than any other 17yr old, just priveleged. Parents should be the role models. Putting her on a pedestal is precarious at best. Her success can’t be passed on, she’s one in a million.

  24. Carol • January 8, 2010 @ 11:33 PM

She wants to make am album that represents who she is? Ok, Britney did that and look where that got her…CRAZY!!!

  25. mandee • January 9, 2010 @ 1:34 AM

demigod on January 8, 2010 10:06 PM ohh ok. i understand your previous comment better now. thanks for clearing that up for me, and i agree completely. thats why i didnt understand why everyone made such a big deal out of the “scandals” that came up involving her. no one is taking into consideration that shes still just a child and she is going to live her life the way a child does, making mistakes along the way that make her a better person. and i agree, parents should be the role models for their children, they shouldnt leave it up to the tv to teach their children values, morals and to be the babysitter.

carol, everyone is different so perhaps her cd that reflects who “she” is wont be anything like britney spears.

  26. Nancy • January 9, 2010 @ 1:59 AM

“Here, my parents are thinking they’re seeing a beautiful picture by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that? It doesn’t make sense to us because (my family) doesn’t look for negativity.” – It doesn’t matter whether she is a role model or not, she was underage and her parents or grandmother or whomever the ADULT was who accompanied her should not have allowed her to be photographed naked, half covered by a sheet. I thought the announcements by her rep after that photo came out said things like, “her parents didn’t know” and stuff like that..? That “they had no idea she would be naked”, etc., and now the story changes to her “parents are thinking they’re seeing a beautiful picture by a major photographer.” I understand that it is a parents job to raise their own children but, so many young girls look up to this young lady and nothing a parent says or does will change that.

  27. Rita • January 9, 2010 @ 4:47 AM

“Shes even smarter than some of the people that comment on these stories on a regular basis.”

You call that smart at her age to “model” just with a sheet???!! Thank you for reminding me about that people. I will never buy her music nor go to her movies, etc., unless I hear an apology from her in some media outlet. Plus I will Never buy a Harpers Bazaar “magazine” again in my entire Life!! Even some adult women Wouldn’t choose to do that under Any circumstances! They would never do that for any amount of $$ in this World! I had a chance to mingle in with the horrible crowd(who had tons of money), when I was a teenager and I said no. Thank Goodness my Mom Didn’t hear about it.

How do you know How smart these people are in different areas that comment on a regular basis. Maybe you are referring to their comments and conclude from them how smart they are. Sures there a few ignorant comments but that doesn’t make them ignorant or dumb in other aspects of their Life!

“The job of being a role model just kinda came with her actual career, at least shes accepting that to thousands, she is one, whether or not we like it.”

Gee, I Wish my job could Make me a Role Model. Are you kidding me? Just becoz she has a singing/acting career does Not Automatically make her a Role Model! That comes with making the RIGHT Decisions in Life and staying True to who you Really Are and staying that way, no matter what! She was still living with her parents when she did that — so where was her mother and where was her father, when she agreed to such Immoral ways?? Oh Yes, and Don’t forget about the Respectful Harper’s Bazaar magazie; how could they even Think that was OK???? How could they even Think a child that age, should be photographed like that, for the world to see and hear about it. I was just shocked when I heard about that! I’m just thinking of a Mother that I once knew and I Know She Would’ve beeen Shocked as well and she has 2 girls, that were teenage girls! She would’ve Never agreed to let her girls go and do something like that, if even if the opportunity presented itself!!

it’s “cute” you’re there, searching and posting in favour of relative newcomer carol, t.g…not so cute you exhibit complete indifference towards long time regular mandee (remember her, you emailed her for ages at home?) and shamefully choose to remain silent…not one word….

  32. Suzanne • January 10, 2010 @ 10:44 AM

I like Miley….At first I thought of her as a star’s child…little rich spoiled kid etc. but I find she is oozing with class, and after reading this article I am even more impressed. I come from a family of artist and certainly understand her point about her parents point of view. Too bad that a majority of the population does look for smut, dirt etc…the same people that buy the trash gossip publications…Miley..tastefully done photo. And yes people in life do make mistakes. This was not a mistake that Miley made. I make mistakes all the time and it makes me a better person for it. I teach my children that it is far important to learn the ability to make a decision, learn to justify it with reason (think it through). Then if it turns out to be wrong, so be it, that IS life. Choose your path/direction at each turn.
Miley sure has one good head on her shoulders for sure.

  33. Suzanne • January 10, 2010 @ 10:52 AM

Rita….get a life….who are you to judge. Shame on everyone for doing so.
Imagine YOUR life in a fishbowl with everyone one surrounding you passing judgement….it’s no wonder there are drug problems, depression, suicides etc in that industry.
Miley owes no appology to anyone. It’s her life, she made a decision, such it up.

  34. Valentina Johnson • January 10, 2010 @ 11:49 AM

I happen to adore Miley Cyrus. She is a great role model. The posing with the sheet was beauty as seen in the eyes of the photographer and if her parents were cool with it then so be it, now if the rest of the public sees it as something that belongs in the pages of Playboy or Hustler Magazine, then they are the ones who have the problem, they are all a bunch of Perverts and Child Molesters who should seriously consider seeing a Shrink for their problems. I never did see the photo myself, but I am a parent and grandparent and as far as I am concerned no matter who your kids have as role models it comes down to the way they are raised by Mom and Dad, ROLE MODELS ARE NOT PARENTS THEY ARE MERE MOLDS. Kids like Miley are good examples look what she has done already and she is only 17 years old. SO REMEMBER ALL OF YOU SICKOS OUT THERE GO SEE YOUR SHRINK AND GET A DICTIONARY TO LOOK UP THE WORD BEAUTY AND ART.

  35. tania • January 10, 2010 @ 4:47 PM

I think that Miley Cyrus is a good role model. I’m a kid myself and she is a pretty good person to look up to. sure she might have her flaws andf make mistakes but don’t we all!? YEAH we do. The vanity fair thing was a gorgrous pic in my opinion. as for all u sickos,.. well.. i don’t know what to say except for that it was a beautiful piece of art so get over the fact she was nude and grow up.

  36. Nancy • January 10, 2010 @ 5:02 PM

Nah, I’m very far from being a “pervert” a “child molester” or a “sicko”….I’m a parent. Thought it was cute when my kids were babies and toddlers to get that cute little shot for the photo album of them in the bathtub, splashing around with an excited look on their faces…not for front page Vanity Fair though…and especially not as 16 year olds! You two (Valentina Johnson & tania) are the ones who think the picture of Miley is “beauty” and “gorgrous” so that, in my opinion, makes you the “sickos”. She’s a minor, maybe Valentina “should seriously consider seeing a Shrink” for her little problems. LOL.

  37. Suzanne • January 10, 2010 @ 6:44 PM

So look at Demi Moore and all those people that were outraged by her nude pose on vanity fair when she was pregnant….she’s loaded with class. Just because you have an artistic flair using your body, doesn’t make you a bad person.

  38. Nancy • January 10, 2010 @ 6:58 PM

It does when you’re a minor.

  39. demigod • January 10, 2010 @ 8:20 PM

Valentina/Tania/Suzanne..let’s stop pretending the idea behind photographing a nude minor draped with a sheet is in the ‘guise’ of art. At the very least, the pic is ‘suggestive’ to the mainstream. Her handlers know this, and it was THEIR decision. She’s an industry puppet being marketed as a ‘brand’, and this is just a stunt.
I’ve heard playboy models claim their photo shoots were ‘artistic’ and ‘tastefully done’ lol

  40. Jo-Anne • January 10, 2010 @ 8:41 PM

well, the burning question is, Nance, if you feel said posters are “sickos” for finding said photo of 16 year old has artistic value, how about Carol finding 17 year old minor “YUM”?

  41. Nancy • January 10, 2010 @ 8:49 PM

Yeah well, Carol is just a “closet sicko” though, hahahahaha!!!

Just kidding, Carol. You can call Taylor Lautner a Young Underage Man (aka YUM) all you want! Hahahaha.

  42. Nancy • January 10, 2010 @ 11:53 PM

After reading this article, and not knowing or seeing anything about the Vanity fair photo shoot,I decided to find out what all the fuss was about! My opinion now is,the photo’s were taken when she was a 15yr old child,a MINOR!!!Proof,go back to April 28Th/2008,just hit (scandal that erupted),in above article. In that April article she is apologizing to her fan’s, and other’s about that particular so called photo shoot! While there, hit (photo’s Cyrus took herself) which was before the April 28Th/2008 Vanity fair article,These are photo’s SHE HERSELF posted online!!NOW,I’ll say role model my A$$,even given her the benefit of a doubt after posting the first set of pic’s.I’d say Ms Cyrus knew full well what was happening at the Vanity Fair shoot,my guess would be damage control for her first set of pic’s she foolishly put online of herself! I will agree with her comment,She is NOT your kid’s parent! As to the rest of this article??? Other’s here may feel differently, but this is my own opinion!!!

  55. Nancy • January 11, 2010 @ 3:15 PM

Once again, Mandee, I will REPEAT (for the umpteenth time), I DID NOT start a fight (hahaha, Jo-WAnne’s favourite word!!) with you on the Angelina article…that is the level YOU took it to by being biased. I simply asked you a very easy to answer question, which you still haven’t given me a straight answer for…being:

WHY did you confront ONE stranger on this site who made ONE sexist comment, when Demigod has put forth sooo many in front of all of us in these past months? I’m sure there are others who would like to hear your answer as well. NOT answering, makes YOU “a childish little b*tch”.

So now, I’ll ask you another question (to which I already know and can PROVE the answer). Have you ever commented to a newcomer on this website that they cannot say certain things as they are not regulars of this website?

Another question, after reading your last comment to Tributegirl…Why is it that when Jo-WAnne tries to cause trouble between you and Tributegirl, you think she is “funny”? Yet, when I ask you a question in my comment and persist about it because you won’t give a straight answer, you call me a “childish little b*tch”; “so grade 8”; “shoving my ridiculous opinions down others throats”.

  56. mandee • January 11, 2010 @ 4:31 PM

Nancy on January 11, 2010 3:15 PM i am not “biased” because i find one person funny (when it is a light breezy joke like go bake a cake) and one person sexist (when its a statement that is based on ALL MEN in the world).

“WHY did you confront ONE stranger on this site who made ONE sexist comment, when Demigod has put forth sooo many in front of all of us in these past months? Im sure there are others who would like to hear your answer as well.”

the answer for that is a) i dont find demigod to be sexist, b) i usually do not come on EVERY DAY so i dont monitor what every person says, c) i dont have to justify myself to you, nor do i have to justify my opinions or reasonings behind them, d) like i said i havent been fighting with ANYONE for a LONG time and i prefer to try to stay drama free (until someone, such as yourself, edges me on and goes out of their way to start a conflict) so how was that not a straight answer? me saying i found someones remark to be a joke and someone else not to be a joke was somehow not straight enough for you? explain that to me? also, tell me, why was my comment regarding something someone said (that had nothing to do with YOU) such a problem? why did it trigger the whole “lets fight with mandee” game? why did it cause you to act like a crazy rabid dog thats frothing at the mouth? as far as im concerned its because you cant stand the fact that someone on here doesnt mimic your every comment, every thought, every fight, every move.

“Another question, after reading your last comment to TributegirlWhy is it that when Jo-WAnne tries to cause trouble between you and Tributegirl, you think she is funny? Yet, when I ask you a question in my comment and persist about it because you wont give a straight answer, you call me a childish little b*tch; so grade 8; shoving my ridiculous opinions down others throats ”

joanne wasnt trying to start a fight between us, i know that. she was simply stating what she was thinking. why is it ok for you to accuse me and demigod and joanne of being such close friends etc but its not ok for her to question tgs friendship with me for allowing you to act like such a jerk towards me over something as trivial as an online gossip column?

anyway, like i said in the other article, i wont be responding to you anymore as long as youre acting crazy. when you want to act like an adult again let me know. when you want to have a normal, civilized conversation im all for it. until then, im not your drama b*itch anymore. find someone else to pick on if you need “blood” that bad!

  57. Nancy • January 11, 2010 @ 6:26 PM

Well Mandee, I’ll answer the questions you asked me.

“How was that not a straight answer?” – So, you find his sexist comments “funny” do you? Him saying Rihanna deserved the beating Chris Brown gave her. All the bad things he has said in the articles involving women, from Robyn Gibson to Tiger Woods wife, etc., etc. Hahahahaha…yeah, real funny. Oh, this one here you’ll find totally hilarious…”Nancy’s ex obviously didn’t beat her hard enough”. You pretend like you don’t remember or like they were jokes and you say that you don’t owe me an explanation but, you have no right to confront someone else for making ONE sexist comment then. My point about your friendship with those two, is that your “opinions” aren’t consistent. They are biased when it comes to your buddies, whether you admit it or not…we ALL know it! As for your comment having nothing to do with me…well, Insane theories and moviefans comments “had nothing to do with YOU” either! But yet, you feel you have the right to question them like a “crazy rabid dog thats frothing at the mouth”! “as far as im concerned its because you cant stand the fact that someone on here doesn’t mimic your every comment, every thought, every fight, every move.” Look in the mirror, Mandee. You did the EXACT same thing you’re accusing me of being childish of.

    – Jo-WAnne WAS trying to cause a fight between you and Tributegirl. Jeeze, take your rose coloured freaking glasses off! She’s wasn’t being “funny” at all…that’s just the excuse you use when it comes to your buddies…AGAIN. You’re actually very predictable when it comes to that. See, here’s the difference between you & your buds and me…you guys need to have what demigod calls a “nest”. You can’t stand alone. Always need someone to have your back. You ONLY attack in packs and no matter how wrong one of you are, you will never admit it for fear of turning on each other. I, on the other hand, don’t give a flying beep what ANYONE thinks and could care less if someone has my back or not. Whether I like you or not, I will confront you on things I feel you should be confronted about, such as being biased. There are a handful like me on here. I thought you were one of them until you showed just how biased you actually were, and no, not just recently. I’ve noticed it with whomever you are getting along with at the time…even when you are getting along with me. You flip flop back and forth between people on here and live in the nest that suits you best for the time being because you can’t fly on your own. So good, don’t talk to me then because that is definitely NOT a quality in which I admire nor respect.
