Miley Cyrus is being sued in regards to her hit song “Flowers,” which allegedly copies sections of Bruno Mars’ hit song, “When I Was Your Man.”
Apparently Miley’s ex-husband Liam Hemsworth once dedicated “When I Was Your Man” to Miley when they were together, and so she used that song as inspiration when she wrote “Flowers” with Liam in mind after they broke up. Three years after their divorce was finalized, she released it in 2023 on January 23 — Liam’s birthday. Take a look at the chorus of “When I Was Your Man”:
Should have bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
‘Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing
But she’s dancing with another man
And the chorus of “Flowers”:
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand Talk to myself for hours Say things you don’t understand I can take myself dancing And I can hold my own hand Yeah, I can love me better than you canIt’s actually Tempo Music Investments, which says it acquired “the copyright interests” from Philip Lawrence, who co-wrote the song with Mars, Ari Levine and Andrew Wyatt, that’s suing Miley, not Bruno Mars, who has not spoken publicly about the lawsuit, and in which he is not named as a plaintiff.
A source told the Daily Mail, “Everyone who knows Miley knows that this track was written as a way of healing from Liam. She wrote lyrics that were a reaction to Bruno’s lyrics in Your Man, specifically because that was Liam’s song to her. She only cared that he knew it was for him. Miley originally wrote it as a slow love ballad, not the fast upbeat song that it became.”
The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles on Monday. ~Alexandra Heilbron

It’s well known that Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus’ godmother, due to her friendship with Billy Ray Cyrus, but now it seems they’re actually distantly related.

I hate her song and just in general, don’t like her. She came out as bi, so why should he stay with her. I bet being with her was like a nightmare, she seems so full of herself. And when she was on David Letterman’s Netflix show, it was just all her, her her. Most people show different aspects of their lives, have Dave over to their house, but not her. She did an interview and performed. It was the most boring episode ever and it looked like by the end, he didn’t like her much either.
It’s been almost 2 years since Flowers was released, so why file the lawsuit now after all this time? Literally everyone was talking about how it was clearly a response to When I Was Your Man immediately after it dropped so they can’t claim that they only just noticed the copyright infringement. This feels like a gross money grab.
How ridiculous – it sounds like answers or comments on the Bruno Mars sing. They should be flattered that their song inspired her. Maybe she should have been a bit more careful but it sounds like she wrote it at an emotional time. People need to pull their heads out of the asses. Not everything is about you!
This lawsuit sounds like bs. Miley’s song has been out for a couple of years and the song is being based on the other song. Not copied.
It was an idea borne from another song, how most songs are likely written! It’s creative & catchy & was a breakout song for Miley. Let her enjoy the success of the song!
In 1983 Stevie Nicks wrote a song called Stand Back. Before releasing it, she rang Prince and told him that her song was inspired by Little Red Corvette, even though most listeners would probably never make the connection. Prince listened to the song, liked it, and at Stevies request, he re-recorded the synthesizer intro. They decided to split the royalties 50/50. The entire disclosure, recording session, and royalty agreement took place in one day, and afterwards they remained friends. No plagiarism, no money-grabbing law suit, no hard feelings. Too bad it cant be that way more often.
In my opinion it doesn’t sound the same. They both sound different in my opinion. I like them both. People are just looking out for money. That’s all. So sad!
