Miley Cyrus says she was bullied in school

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 4, 2009 | 27 Comments

Miley CyrusIn her upcoming autobiography, Miley Cyrus: Miles To Go, Miley Cyrus reveals that when she was younger and attending public school, she was “friendless, lonely and miserable.” She explains, “The girls took it beyond normal bullying. These were big, tough girls. I was scrawny and short. They were fully capable of doing me bodily harm.” Miley says her bullies formed the ‘Anti-Miley Club’, and one day they threatened her in the school lunchroom. “Three girls strutted up and stood towering over me….They started cussing me and telling me to get up. I sat there, frozen. I didn’t know what to do. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore,” she recalls. “I stood up, still a foot shorter than they were, and said, “What’s your problem? What did I ever do to you?’” She says at another time, “They shoved me in [a locker]. I was trapped. I banged on the door until my fists hurt. Nobody came. I spent what felt like an hour in there, waiting for someone to rescue me, wondering how my life had gotten so messed up.” Miley says the girls’ hatred of her was because her father is Billy Ray Cyrus. She says they would tell her: “Your dad’s a one-hit wonder. You’ll never amount to anything — just like him.”

Boo Hoo, and now your filthy rich. GET OVER IT!

  2. Mary • March 4, 2009 @ 2:31 PM

Poor Smiley oops, I mean miley or was that Reilly? Who cares as Adam states your filthy rich now get over it. Everyone at one time or another has been bullied, where were the lunchroom monitors when this was going on? I’m sure big daddy would have done something as well. As for an autobiography, you haven’t even lived long enough to have lived a life that would be interesting enough to want to read about it. Good Marketing though should pull in plenty of bucks from the 12 and under.

Somehow this just doesn’t ring true to me. I could be wrong, but I think either she is embellishing a little (lot), or it could be a (not so) clever PR ploy.

I think that this particular aspect of her autobiography is true but I don’t doubt it is embellished. I mean, Billy Ray WAS a one hit wonder and kids are mean. I am sure they were mean to her and I am sure they teased the crap out of her because of who she is and mainly for who her dad is or was in the music industry for that matter. Majority of teasing is based on jealousy and like I said before, kids are mean so I am sure she was teased.
As for this being a huge seller among 12 year olds, absolutely. I am sure they were not marketing it toward the older crowds. And who knows, maybe it will be a boost for some young kids who do get teased at school. They may look at it as someone rising above bullying and being picked on.
I will buy it for my daughter if she wants to read it.

Totally agreed, Jim, plus there are a lot of kids who do not generally like to read, who will read this. What I meant about a PR ploy is it is something that could possibly offset some of the negative press she’s received in the last few months.

Ok. I see what you mean now and I agree. She has been blasted in the press lately and has made some mistakes that have been,in my mind, stupid stuff. This may just be a PR ploy to overshadow the negativity and perhaps was brought to light at this time due to the ridiculous impending lawsuit that she is dealing with.

Exactly, sorry I didn’t make that clear before in my earlier comment.

A part of the bullying problem is many victims are afraid to speak up…so, I understand Miley’s reluctance….

This sums it up well (read on Internet)
“Another important finding from these research studies is that most students who are bullied either do not report the bullying to adults, or they wait a very long time before doing so. The reasons include feelings of shame, fear of retaliation for reporting, and fear that adults cannot or will not protect the victim in the settings where bullying usually takes place: the playground, the hallway of the school, or on the way to and from school.”

You only have to look at the number of young people in the news constantly who have suffered, some even fatally, at the hands of a bully to know this is a very serious issue and being open to believing it “may have happened” is a good start to at least give potential victims a chance to be heard…

sounds like if it wasn’t Chris Brown or some other woman-hating-bashing-manipulating-nevertoberehabilitated domestic abuser who did this, then tributegirl has no sympathy, and thinks its all made up.

Did she even go by Miley back then?
I thought she was Destiny Hope until she got famous.

  11. tributegirl • March 4, 2009 @ 5:31 PM

Yeah, I was wondering about that, I couldn’t remember her given name at birth, but knew it wasn’t Miley.

  12. Alexandra • March 4, 2009 @ 6:08 PM

She’s been nicknamed Miley since she was a toddler, because she was very “smiley” as a kid. Although her legal name was Destiny Hope, she’s never been called that and last year, legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus.

  13. Nancy • March 4, 2009 @ 6:34 PM

I bet she wasn’t too “smiley” when she was reportedly being bullied.

  14. tributegirl • March 4, 2009 @ 8:14 PM

annette, your comment doesn’t make any sense.

  15. Nancy • March 4, 2009 @ 8:43 PM

Smiley needs a haircut! Hmmm….I wonder if I’ll get grilled for my “positivity” on this article. 😛

  16. mandee • March 4, 2009 @ 11:16 PM

maybe she doesnt need to “get over it” as some of you more helpful, yet still uninformed people have put it. maybe the REASON she is bringing up the bullying is probably to prove to everyone that she is just as human as the rest of us and has been through hard times in her life, even though she is still young. some of you people need to give her a break.

Miley Cyrus will have her vengence upon thee!

Miley has gotten many ideas from watching “Carrie” and will initiate them not only towards her bullies but towards the world!
Miley even looks like Carrie in this photo, coincidence? Don’t you bet on it!

Miley has secretly formed her Illuminato “Anti-World Club” with her daddy, her P.R. manager and Satan himself!

Miley will Commence phase one of her Locust Plague reprisal upon humanity for calling her daddy a one-hit wonder! She will show them what she’s amounted to!

Miley’s cute, sweet facade hides her inner most evil retribution intentions upon us all.
Do not let your children listen to her music played backwards! They will be friendless, lonely and miserable!

    Mark my words!

Miley is leading us to Oblivion!
Wheather we realize it or not, it has begun and cannot be stopped!
    We are already programmed!

  19. Nancy • March 5, 2009 @ 1:25 PM

I find in this photo, ABADDON, that Miley more resembles the girl who crawled out of the well on The Ring!

  20. Nancy • March 5, 2009 @ 1:26 PM

Were’s Chris Brown when you realy need him, teach this fooow Miley what a real bullying and beat down is all aboutz…. keep it real!!!!!

    I await your comment Nancy

  23. Nancy • March 5, 2009 @ 7:04 PM

Well, Chris Brown was officially charged today but he’s still out on bail. He’s all lovey-dovey for the time being with his new bride, Rihanna. The affadavits came out in court today, Max. Seems that Chris tried to shove Rihanna out of the car while she still had her seatbelt on, slamming her head against the window and repeatedly punching her with his right hand while he drove. So, in answer to your “Where’s Chris Brown when you really need him?” question….he’s probably somewhere in LA preparing to beat the sh!t outta Rihanna again!!!
