After being the lovable sideshow in two Despicable Me movies, Kevin, Stuart and Bob get their own movie in Minions, which easily took the top spot at this weekend’s box office. With a domestic take of $115.2 million, Minions becomes the second biggest animated opening of all time, behind Shrek the Third, which took in $121.6 million during its opening weekend back in 2007. But Minions also lays claim to the title of biggest opening ever for an animated 3D film, and biggest animated opening day ever with $46.2 million on Friday. Coming in a distant second this week is Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, having made $18.1 million. The record-smashing hit has left audiences wanting more, rating it 4 stars.
Falling from first place to third this week was another animated hit, Inside Out, starring Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling, which earned $17.1 million. Tribute.ca readers continue to love this movie, rating it 4.5 stars.
Dropping to fourth this week is the latest installment in the Terminator franchise, Terminator Genisys, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke. The sequel brought in $13.7 million. Tribute.ca readers enjoyed the film, rating at 3.75 stars.
Rounding out the top 5 this week is The Gallows. Set in an abandoned high school, this horror flick terrified moviegoers and drew in $10 million. Tribute.ca readers were unimpressed by the film, rating it 2.3 stars.
