Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp’s sign language error

Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp are being criticized for making what some are calling the biggest error in Paul McCartney’s new music video for “My Valentine.” McCartney recently released three music videos featuring the celebrities doing sign language to the lyrics. One video featured Portman, another with Depp and the last one was a collaboration with both stars. However, the celebrities ended up signing gestures that actually altered the meaning of the song. Depp reportedly gestured “my enemy” instead of “my valentine.” Just 55 seconds into her video, Portman signed the word “tampon” in place of the word “always.” A spokesman from the British Deaf Association said, “It would have been nice if genuine deaf people had been used.” However, he later praised the video, noting that the stars’ performances were “more of a poetic expression” then a literal translation of the lyrics. ~Krystin Edgerton

and they didn’t think to at least have a deaf person in the editing booth, before the video’s release? not having a deaf person do the signing was stupid, but not having a qualified “signer” as part of the editing process just inexcusable.

“inexcusable?” Really? What an amusing rigid perspective.

I love that the sign language word for “tampon” is similar to “always.” Is it because “always” is a brand of feminine hygiene product?

Is there a sign word for “queef?”

My thumbs up for both those first two comments.
