New on DVD – Selma, Fifty Shades of Grey and more

Fifty Shades of GreyThere are 10 new releases on DVD this week that are bound to catch your attention. With so many options, you are definitely going to catch a flick of your interest. Whether it be the moving story of Selma or the fantasy love story in  Fifty Shades of Grey, there’s a new release for everyone’s taste this week.  ~Erin Stewart

Selma tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his struggle to get voting rights for all people. In this film, Luther King Jr. stands up against racial discrimination and makes history after his acts, joined by many followers, encourage President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) to sign the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The journey to getting the signature was long and dangerous, with many peaceful protests turned violent and many lives harmed in the process.

The box office hit Fifty Shades of Grey comes out on DVD this week. Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), 21, is studying at Washington State University. Her life turns upside down when she meets Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a 27-year-old successful and wealthy entrepreneur. She enters into a world with him that she never imagined she would be in.

Chris Evans stars in the comedy Playing it Cool as a writer who doesn’t believe in love, until he meets an engaged woman (Michelle Monaghan). At first he is in denial about his feelings but when he starts to realize that she could be gone forever after marrying her fiancé, Chris starts to get serious and tries to win her heart.

Black or White stars Kevin Costner as a widower named Elliot who must raise his biracial granddaughter, Eloise,  after the death of his wife and daughter. It is an adjustment raising her alone and when Eloise’s paternal grandmother tries to get custody of the child, Elliot does everything he can to stop her.

Mr. Turner depicts British artist J.M.W. Turner (Timothy Spall) in his last 25 years of life. Turner is a successful British painter and travels the country for inspiration for his craft. Mr. Turner has poor relationships with his family, aside from the close relationship he has with his father. Turner meets a new woman on a trip to the seaside and she helps him deal with the highs and lows of his life.

Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) have been best friends for years but their relationship becomes complicated in Love, Rosie. The comedy is about best friends unable to take their relationship to the next level even though they love each other. The film is based on the novel Where Rainbows End by Irish author Cecilia Ahern.

A team of U.S. archaeologists discover the find of a century — an ancient pyramid buried in the Egyptian desert in the film The Pyramid. Although they are warned not to enter the pyramid, the archaeologists don’t listen. They soon find that they are trapped and being hunted by whatever creatures haunt the pyramid.

Jude Law stars as an unemployed submarine captain in the thriller Black Sea. After giving his life to his job and being let go, Jude Law’s character takes a shady job searching for gold in the Black Sea. The job turns dangerous and violent as the men start turning on each other in order to take home more of the lost treasure for themselves.

Written and directed by Ryan Gosling, Lost River is about a mother is trying to raise her two sons in their family home in an abandoned city, Lost River. The mother goes into a dark underworld in order to keep her family in their home and her eldest son tries to find out what happened to their city.

Murder of a Cat is a comedy coming out on DVD this week. When a man-child’s (Fran Kranz) cat is killed by an arrow, he must team up with an ally (Nikki Reed) to find out who murdered his best friend. He finds many suspects and will not rest until the culprit is caught.
