New Zealand aggravated over Argo

Early in Ben Affleck‘s Oscar-winning movie Argo there’s a mention of New Zealand: “Brits turned them away. Kiwis turned them away. Canadians took them in.” The movie premiered five months ago, but discontent has been brewing ever since in New Zealand about the said reference. The country joins Iran and Canada in the list of nations who feel they were misrepresented in the fictionalized account of how six Americans were sheltered undercover and secreted out of Iran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Steve Matthewman, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Auckland, said, “It’s touched a really raw nerve. We do seem in New Zealand to be oversensitive to how the rest of the world perceives us.” ~Carlos Laron
