Nicki Minaj bails on concert minutes before performance

Nicki Minaj is always the consummate entertainer—unless someone talks smack about her music. The hip-pop superstar angered many fans yesterday when she pulled out of the Hot 97 Summer Jam Tour just minutes before she was scheduled to go onstage. It all started when the tour’s emcee, Peter Rosenberg, insulted Minaj’s current billboard smash, “Starships” while introducing rapper Kendrick Lamar. “I know there are some chicks in here waiting to sing along with “Starships” later. I’m not talking to y’all right now. F— that bulls—.” Minaj was understandably displeased, as was her label’s president, Lil Wayne, who ordered she pull out of the concert as well as the rest of his Young Money performers (Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled). The abrupt exit left organizers scrambling, as Minaj was the headlining act for the concert series, one of the biggest events in the hip-hop industry. Nas and Lauryn Hill went onstage in her place and closed the night. The “Super Bass” hit maker immediately took to Twitter to defend her actions, writing, “I go above and beyond for my fans, but won’t ever go against Wayne’s word. What he says goes.” Rosenberg, however, stuck to his guns, tweeting that the dig wasn’t a personal attack but was merely an expression of his distaste for the song. ~Kyle Sharp
