Nicole Kidman “most overpaid celebrity”

Nicole KidmanForbes magazine has named Nicole Kidman Hollywood’s most overpaid celebrity, because her films, such as Bewitched, The Golden Compass, Margot at the Wedding, consistently under perform at the box office, yet she continues to command a high salary. “Despite winning an Oscar for her performance in 2002’s The Hours, Kidman has become the most overpaid celebrity in Hollywood,” the magazine says. Jennifer Garner was second, while Tom Cruise was third. Also in the top ten are Cameron Diaz, Jim Carrey, Nicolas Cage (his current movie, Bangkok Dangerous, made less than $8 million in its debut weekend), Drew Barrymore, Will Ferrell (Kidman’s Bewitched co-star) and Cate Blanchett. Forbes divided the total earnings of each actor’s last three films by the gross income to get the star’s payback total. At the other end, Russell Crowe‘s worth per movie has improved with the success of American Gangster, which earned $10.80 for every dollar the Australian superstar was paid for his role.

Forbes base this on how much a celebrity makes compared to how much money they draw at the box office. I would be interested in seeing who is the most overpaid celebrity if you go by the charitable contribution to salary/earnings ratio. In the opinion poll, Oprah Winfey leads the way but she has given so much $$$ to her community and to Africa. As well as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet they have been very generous philanthropists.

I’d be curious to know which one is underpaid.

Can’t believe Nicole Kidman’s vote garnered only 9% as being overpaid. The only movie I liked of hers was Dead Calm and 90% of her other movies were terrible – Stepford Sisters and Betwitched the worst and the rest mediocre. Hours was boring along with Invasion but Malice was an improvement.
It’s time the movie moguls stopped paying such outrageous unwarranted salaries and then maybe the tickets would be cheaper. Now Cate Blanchett is one fabulous actress and warrants a good payout but still not what they receive.

Milley Cirus is useless.. that’s why I voted for her.
Kidman is not a very appealing performer IMO but she doesn pull some powerfull roles.. is she over paid? Heck, I think all celebs are over paid, people like Bill Gates earn their cash with inovation and business skills, nit a pretty face.

On a side note, Kidman look slike she’s made out of wax 🙂

I think this is a pretty meaningless statistic, and therefore a flawed conclusion. It attributes the entire box office take of a movie to a single one of its stars. What about story, director, marketing campaign, release base, etc. etc. etc.?
This way of thinking can sometimes work for the stars -leading to higher and higher paycheques, and sometimes work against them, but is an unfair watermark of their talent and commitment level to the craft of movie making -not to mention a gross understatement of all the other people’s contributions to the success / failure of movies.

Thought she did a really good job in To Die For, Portrait of a Lady, The Hours, The Others, Cold Mountain and looking forward to Australia. Think she is a very talented actor, given the right material to showcase her talents.

Hugely surprising is J. Garner ranks 2nd, that she, D. Barrymore and C.Diaz would come anywhere close to the mega talented Cate Blanchett. Russell Crowe, likewise I would hope to see way at the top.

Understand these actor’s appeal, and many of their “cute comedic” movies aimed at a certain audience which does bring in the bucks.

But shere talent alone, I’d take Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe, and yes, Jim Carrey (a huge fan) over the lot.
