It was a slow weekend at the box office as a lot of people decided to spend the Martin Luther King weekend in other ways.
Mufasa: The Lion King held onto the top spot for the second weekend in a row. Despite what some considered to be a disappointing opening, the Disney film has shown strong legs in the weeks following, as it grossed $15.4 million (three-day total) in its fifth weekend. The film’s domestic total now sits at $209.7 million.
One of Them Days debuted in the second spot at the box office over the three-day weekend. The R-rated comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA took in $14 million (three-day total). The film has received strong critical reviews, and with a reported budget of $14 million, it could leg out a nice profit for Sony.
Leigh Whannell’s latest creature feature Wolf Man opened in a disappointing third place this weekend. The film brought in $12.3 million (three-day total), which was significantly lower than Whannell’s last film, 2020’s The Invisible Man, which opened number one and brought in $28.2 million. With a reported budget of around $25 million, Wolf Man is not an automatic loss for Universal, but with a CinemaScore of C- it does not look like it will be reaching the heights of The Invisible Man.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 raced its way to fourth place. In its fifth week of release, the film tallied an additional $11 million (three-day total). The film’s domestic total of $219 million is the highest in the franchise.
Rounding out the top five was Moana 2. The animated film brought in $7.8 million during its eighth week of release. The film has now grossed $444.5 million domestically and passed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
