Disney/Pixar’s animated film Onward leapt to the top of the box office charts in its debut weekend.
The charming film starring the voice talents of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt earned $40 million domestically and $68 million worldwide. But despite generally positive reviews, Onward‘s take ranks with 2015’s The Good Dinosaur ($39 million) as among Pixar’s lowest opening weekends. Click here to read our interview with the filmmakers.
Falling a spot to second place was Universal’s The Invisible Man. The thriller starring Elisabeth Moss collected an additional $15.2 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $52.7 million.
Another new release, The Way Back starring Ben Affleck as an alcoholic former championship basketball player asked to coach his alma mater’s struggling team, debuted in third place with $8.5 million.
Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog fell two spots to fourth place in its fourth weekend at the box office. The family friendly film earned $8 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $140.8 million, ever closer to overtaking Pokémon Detective Pikachu‘s $144.1 million, which will make it the highest grossing video game movie of all time.
The Call of the Wild starring Harrison Ford rounds out the top five. The latest adaptation of the classic novel by Jack London earned $7 million in its third weekend bringing its domestic total to $57.5 million. ~Emily Chavez
