Oscar to nominate 10 films for Best Picture

By Alexandra Heilbron on June 25, 2009 | 2 Comments

OscarsAcademy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences prexy Sid Ganis announced at a press conference Wednesday morning that, as there were between 1931 and 1943, there will again be 10 films nominated for Best Picture in the upcoming year, rather than five. Ganis explained that having a longer list would enable documentaries, foreign-language films, animated features and “maybe even a comedy” to get Best Picture nods. Variety speculates that the move to include more films — and possibly more commercially successful films — may encourage more people to watch the televised ceremony. All of the other categories will continue to have the same number as before, and the ceremony is not expected to run any longer because of the increased number of Best Picture nominees.
