The Oscars are going to honor the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, which was a best picture nominee in 1939. Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced the news today, saying, “We are delighted to celebrate the birthday of one of the most beloved movies of all time at this year’s Oscars.” The Wizard of Oz received six Oscar nominations, winning two for Original Score and Song. The star of the movie, Judy Garland, won a “Juvenile” Oscar at the same Academy Awards ceremony for “her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year.” One of the most beloved screen musicals of all time, the movie was released last October in a special DVD/Blu-ray edition with five discs, to commemorate the 75th anniversary: The Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition. The 86th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
