Although he is a fictional dragon, Smaug remains a feared antagonist in The Hobbit. Centuries of sleeping on his stolen treasures caused gold and gemstones to become embedded in his belly, though one small spot of flesh remained. Benedict Cumberbatch provided the voice and motion-capture for film. The actor sought to portray a tone that was a blend of animalistic and human, a tone that was virtually unedited for the film.
