Haing S. Ngor – The Killing Fields

The story behind Haing S. Ngor's journey to Hollywood itself could have been a film in its own right, as the late Cambodian actor never set out to be an actor. The Khmer Rouge executed intellectuals, so Ngor, a practicing medical doctor in his native land, had to conceal his medical training. This lead to tragedy when he made the toughest decision of his life—to not save his wife, who died giving birth, for fear of him and the rest of his family being murdered. After making his way to the United States, Ngor honored his late wife by starring in 1984's The Killing Fields, bringing authenticity to the role that gained huge acclaim and earned him two BAFTAs, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar.
