Fences (2016)

Based on August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, Fences tells the story of Troy (Denzel Washington), a middle-class Black American working hard to provide for his family. Growing up, he dreamed of becoming a baseball player but was rejected because of the color of his skin. Bitter over the missed opportunity, Troy refuses to let his son Cory (Jovan Adepo) play football in order to get a scholarship. Troy’s struggle to come to terms with his past eventually leads to more tension within the family, specifically with his wife (Viola Davis). The film shows the effects of racism and how the pain of the past can be passed down to future generations.
