Power Rangers (2017)

The 2017 film reboot of the Power Rangers franchise was quite the surprise upon its release. The film had a superbly talented young cast led by Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and Naomi Scott, with an emphasis on fleshing out their characters. Director Dean Israelite's film succeeded exceptionally well in that area, winning over a good portion of the audience, but then where did Power Rangers fall short of its goals? That would be in its art direction and design. As much as it was admirable to see the film try to distance itself from its Japanese origins, the revamped designs of its suits, robotic vehicles and villains ended up straying too far. This was especially true for the '90s kids that the film was targeting through nostalgia, as the new designs were especially alienating. Something that paid greater homage to the original designs would've gone a long way in satiating the desire to bring in new audiences, while drawing in old ones.
