Best – Increased Consciousness of Representations and Diversity

With social consciousness being a huge focus during the past decade, it’s no surprise that it has also affected the entertainment and media industries. The status quo in Hollywood needed to be challenged and it came to the forefront with the social media hashtag #OscarsSoWhite in 2015, when the lack of diversity in the prestigious awards ceremony became incredibly apparent, despite there being a good number of nominees that could have been recognized. Although positive change has been slow to come, it has come nonetheless. It hasn't been perfect and there have been plenty of hiccups along the way, but those within the industry and the audiences it serves have done a better job of holding studios, production companies, and casting agencies accountable for egregious and archaic practices that limit opportunities for visible minorities.
