Titanic (1997)

Considering that the crux of Titanic's story is the fictional love story between Jack and Rose, the film already takes liberties with its depiction of the ship's infamous fate. First and foremost is the depiction of First Officer William McMaster Murdoch, a character based on a real life figure of the same name. In the film he is shown shooting ship passengers while in a panicked state before killing himself. In contrast there are eyewitness accounts proving the opposite and painting Murdoch as a hero. His portrayal was such a point of contention that his relatives were justifiably outraged, leading to a personal apology from one of the film’s producers.
