Calvary (2014)

If the U.K. had their own version of the Coen Brothers, it would be the McDonaghs: John Michael and Martin. Martin is best known for his Hollywood features Seven Psychopaths and the Oscar-nominated drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. John Michael, on the other hand, hasn’t quite hit the same level of popularity, despite boasting a filmography just as impressive. His 2014 drama Calvary is a compelling look at the state of Catholicism in Ireland through the lens of a small town, boasting a fantastic lead performance by Brendan Gleeson that should not be missed.
