Robert Downey Jr. was cast in the legal comedy-drama Ally McBeal one week after he was released from a substance abuse treatment facility. He was instantly a hit on the show, but behind the scenes he continued to battle his addiction problems, later claiming he was at his “lowest point in terms of addictions.” Right before Ally and his character Larry Paul were going to be married, Downey Jr. was arrested for suspicion of being under drug influence and was written out of show. Not quite the happily-ever-after the showrunners had in mind.
