With such talent joining a prestigious picture, there were high hopes for this film based on the Zhenyun Liu novel Remembering 1942, as it was China’s 2013 entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Unfortunately, in spite of lofty production values and foreign star power, this film about the 1942 famine in the Chinese province of Henan failed to garner a nomination, but continued to be another high-profile project for two Hollywood stars.
