The story of 1930s and ‘40s actress Frances Farmer, this film stars Jessica Lange in the title role, one that earned her an Oscar nomination. Frances had a rebellious reputation and struggled with substance abuse. She was arrested on one occasion, deemed mentally ill by a psychiatrist, spent time in several mental institutions and also reportedly received a transorbital lobotomy. The film traces her tumultuous tale.
Side note: Although Jessica, who fell in love with co-star Sam Sheppard while filming this project, didn’t win the Best Actress Oscar for Frances, she did nab the Best Supporting Actress award in the same year for her role in Tootsie. In an odd coincidence, Jessica’s character in Frances is at one point called “a little tootsie.”
