The Last King of Scotland (2006)

With a juggernaut performance by Forest Whitaker, this film is based on the events of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s merciless regime as seen through the lens of his personal physician Dr. Nicholas Garrigan during the 1970s. Once Nicholas, who is played by James McAvoy, discovers Idi’s means of retaining power, he fights for his life in an attempt to escape Idi’s tight grasp. In one of the Academy’s wisest decisions in recent years, Forest was awarded the Best Actor Oscar for his multi-layered and deeply unsettling work.

Side note: “The Last King of Scotland” is a moniker Idi Amin gave himself.
