Her (2013)

Certainly the most subtle of all the films on our list, Spike Jonze's romantic drama depicts the future as a much-less intimidating place than some of the others on this list. Set in a cool, futuristic Los Angeles, a depressed divorcé named Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) purchases a smart operating system to help curb his loneliness. Programmed to adapt and evolve, the OS (voiced by the sultry Scarlett Johansson) names herself Samantha, and soon the two begin dating solely through verbal communication. However, as with all artificially intelligent beings, Samantha evolves past her human lover. Winning Jonze an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Her is a beautiful, heartbreaking, and imaginative look at companionship and love in the digital era.
