Since his wife's death, a veterinarian (Patrick McGoohan) has turned cold and unsympathetic, even towards his only daughter, seven-year-old Mary (Karen Dotrice). When her beloved cat Thomasina is injured, she takes him to her father, believing he can help. Instead, he says the cat has tetanus and euthanizes her. Shattered and grief-stricken, Mary stops speaking to or looking at her father, declaring him dead. Mary and her friends have a funeral for Thomasina, but before they can bury her, they dash off when Lori, a beautiful young woman whom the children believe to be a witch, comes upon them. Lori discovers the cat is still alive and brings her home to nurse her back to life.
