Best Picture: The Shape of Water (2018)

Thanks to the exceptional growth of genre cinema this past decade, the Oscars opened up the number of nominations for Best Picture up to 10. As a result, a record number of films put themselves up for the Academy of Arts and Sciences – Motion Picture's most prestigious award: Best Picture. From the decade's past winners, my pick for the top Best Picture winner can only be Guillermo del Toro’s masterful The Shape of Water. The Mexican director effortlessly blends his love for dark fantasies with a fairy tale love story in a film for the ages. As both a love letter to his inspirations and a testament to his craft as an artist, The Shape of Water perfectly embodies everything that makes Guillermo del Toro such a captivating storyteller.
