As a result, a record number of films put themselves up for the Academy of Arts and Sciences – Motion Picture's most prestigious award: Best Picture. From the decade's past winners, my pick for the top Best Picture winner can only be Guillermo del Toro’s masterful The Shape of Water. The Mexican director effortlessly blends his love for dark fantasies with a fairy tale love story in a film for the ages. As both a love letter to his inspirations and a testament to his craft as an artist, The Shape of Water perfectly embodies everything that makes Guillermo del Toro such a captivating storyteller.
