Considering how beautifully composed Donnie Darko is, it’s okay that, more than 10 years later, writer/ director Richard Kelly has yet to follow up the brilliance of his first feature film. Situated somewhere between a morose dark comedy, a 1980s nostalgia piece and metaphysical adventure—Donnie Darko features breakout performances by Jake Gyllenhaal as well as his sister Maggie. With a rocking soundtrack and a formidable manipulation of chronology, Donnie Darko is a must see coming of age time travel film that leaves you thinking.
