Based on French photojournalist Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetée, Terry Gilliam’s 1995 post-apocalyptic time travel movie 12 Monkeys gives well deserved homage to its predecessor. Still, it’s Gilliam’s definitive style that makes our civilization’s bleak future somehow look funnier. Penned by Blade Runner writers David Webb and Janet Peoples, we meet prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis). Cole lives in the impoverished subterranean civilization of the future and is promised his freedom if only he agrees to take a dangerous journey back in time to collect information about the virus that made the Earth’s surface inhabitable. Featuring Brad Pitt as loony asylum inmate Jeffery Goines, 12 Monkeys is a visually impressive, yet charming time travel movie.
