A Wrinkle in Time is a film that had the rare opportunity to cash in on a perfect storm of events. Coming off the huge momentum of Black Panther for PoC-led films, the #MeToo movement, pushes for bigger female-led blockbusters, and featuring a cast of powerhouse women highlighted by Oprah Winfrey, it was a complete shock that the end product from acclaimed director Ava DuVernay was such a disappointment both critically and financially. All said, the film still debuted at No. 2 in its opening weekend and did finish with a total over $100 million on a production budget of $103 million, but regardless, it was a disappointment for Disney.
