Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known as Sting, was 10 when he discovered music via a Spanish guitar left at his home by a friend of his father. While attending nightclubs to listen to the music, he studied at Northern Counties College of Education and in 1974 graduated as a math teacher. He taught for two years, performing jazz in his spare time. He always wore a black and yellow striped sweater that reminded his bandleader of a bee, hence the nickname. In a 2011 Time article, he said: "I was never called Gordon. You could shout 'Gordon' in the street and I would just move out of your way."
