Whoopi Goldberg

At 17, Whoopi Goldberg, then known as Caryn Johnson, was a troubled girl with a lot on her mind. Dyslexic, she dropped out of high school, was addicted to heroin and married, then divorced her drug counselor. She’s worked as a bricklayer, a bank teller and as a makeup artist in a mortuary. Eventually, she turned to stand-up comedy, where she was seen by Steven Spielberg and cast in The Color Purple, thus beginning her very successful feature film career.
